Wise: Can Campbell Get It Done?

Great article from Mike Wise:

washingtonpost.com

I love the stats he uses courtesy of GTripp's favorite guys, Football Outsiders.

Among the notables:

-When he had time to set up and throw, an 85.7 completion %.

-Campbell was knocked down, hit or sacked a combined 88 times, or 16.2 percent of the time, when he dropped back to pass last season -- more than all but three other quarterbacks.

-Campbell had more passes dropped than any other starting quarterback last season. Thirty-nine drops! His best wide receivers, Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El, combined to let 21 passes thrown to them by Campbell slip through their hands last season.

-Statistically, he also was at the bottom of passes overthrown and underthrown for quarterbacks with at least 200 passes. The top four quarterbacks above him in the accuracy category? Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Brett Favre and Kurt Warner.

Sounds pretty simple to me: don't drop his passes and keep him upright, and we've got ourselves a baller at QB. Keeping him upright is my biggest concern right now.

Thoughts??

Man I can't wait until 4:15 on Sunday.

Very good article and I think the stats say a lot. Can't wait to see us in real game action!

GMScud has it exactly right ya'll...JC is money when given the opportunity.

Just curious if the drops by WR statistic for starting QBs is something everybody new about? I didn't know the stat but man it was just so obvious watching last year...for all his ability Moss just gets the dropsies too often (I know it's not all on him). I really hope the WR corp is more consistent this year

Re: Wise: Can Campbell Get It Done?

I prefer catch rate to drops for obvious reasons: if the ball is not caught, it's a wasted play whether or not the ball hit the receiver in the hands, but these numbers do a good job painting the picture of futility with our passing offense.

Re: Wise: Can Campbell Get It Done?

That is basically what i've been saying but with way more details. If we dedicate to protecting the QB like the Pats & Giants do along with good receiver play we can dominate. Not to say, JC is perfect because he is far from it but the guy that lead us to 6-2 is still here. When the line broke down last year at the end both Portis & JC production dropped & so did our record to 2-6. That's why i'm glad we addressed our defensive issues this year but next years draft we must concentrate on the o-lineman. The numbers don't lie protecting the QB and catch the ball we can win more than 8 games.

If Tana didn't drop a fine deep ball in the 2nd Cowboys game, we might have won, and the season last year might have turned out very differently.

I'm not busting on Tana here, just echoing the idea that dropped passes really harmed us last year.

It's one of those "gray" stats if I'm not mistaken. I don't think you can find drops on NFL.com, Yahoo, or a lot of the other sources of stats that average fans or fantasy players have access to. There are some obscure sites, like iWon.com, who keep them around though:

iWon - NFL League Stats

Those numbers obviously aren't square with what Wise was saying, since it shows Santana with 8 drops, but you can probably use them to compare WR's.

What's pretty interesting is the other stat -- passes not caught -- which doesn't assign blame to the WR, but instead subtracts completions from targets:

iWon - NFL League Stats

When is that opportunity coming though is my question? These stupid idots didn't draft any O linemen and signed Haynesworth, who I am willing to bet is going to be somewhat of a bust for us. He will be productive, but not worth nearly what we paid to acquire him.

Can you at least let the guy play a game or two before he is considered a bust?

I bet if Haynesworth had signed with the Giants or the Pats no one would be calling him a possible bust.

Is Eli going to be worth his salary to the Giants?
no, but to keep him off the market they paid him.

Would anyone here have been happy if the Giants had gotten AH, and we got Canty?
I hope not! We paid what we had to in order to get a top level Dominant DT. Had we offered a lesser package, he would have gone to the Bucs or Giants.

Good read. It seems Jason has taken control of the team more this year than in others. He has to be a leader to be succesful. JZ also has to design plas that can use JS's skill set. He has a powerful arm, good pocket awareness, and good mobility.

Is money going to matter if the CBA is not signed and we go into an uncapped season?

I'm not blowing the horn of praise on the Haynesworth signing with a salary cap but if the front office just tried to secure the biggest priced free agent because they know there will be no cap next year (or after) then the move isn't that bad.

Re: Wise: Can Campbell Get It Done?

If he can get just a little bit more accuracy and that winners edge, u kno, the knack of making big plays and coming up big when its needed........well, there is no limit to what he can do.

I am totally behind him, and I think even the fans who wanted a different qb need to get behind him and make the best of it. He could very well be the FUTURE of this team, and nothing would help him out more than a team and ALL of the greatest fans on earth having his back and supporting him through the good and bad times.........

Let him play, I have a feeling that us fans will not be disappointed.

If the O Line holds up we become the best team in the NFL, not even kidding.
