I couldn't believe it when I heard it this morning. The last I heard, the death toll was up to 13,340 people. Unbelievable.

Thats horrible. 13,000 people!!!

I have a question that I hope is not inappropriate. But if somthing like that were to hit in the US, would the toll be anything near that?

it depends...the tsunami is what caused most of the devastation...people never saw it coming. I am pretty sure we can't have any earthquakes out in the middle of the pacific or atlantic so we won't have the threat of a tsunami, like they yeaterday. if a quake hit east of japan, there is a possibility of a tsnami hitting hawaii but i don't think it would ever reach the west coast....it would have to be one really really big earthquake. so to answer your question no, the toll would never be near what happened today. funny thing is i was reading just the other day about how that asteroid might hit us in 2029....it jumped from a 1 in 300 chance to a 1 in 45 chance in just a few days...they talked about if it hit in the middle of the atlantic it would cause a huge tsunami like wave to hit us and the easter european countries. and then to wake up and hear about a tsunami today was really weird.

Definitely puts things in perspective.

Those waves were massive, scary stuff!

I saw a show on Discovery a while back and there is a possibility of one hitting the east coast, there's some piece of land (I forget where) that is slowly sliding in to the ocean and if it breaks away in a large enough piece it could create a massive tsunami that would definitely cause significant damage here.

right now the death toll is up to 44,000 and unfortunately it doesn't look like it's going to stop getting larger any time soon. This does help put things in life into perspective as matty said as well as the fact that under the right, or wrong, circumstances, something like this could very well happen again anywhere at any time.

it's up to 114,000 now. it's pretty terrifying how something like this can practically spring up out of no where.

The worst part is a lot of the casualties could have been avoided if they had a proper warning system in place.
