Something to Ponder -- 2001 WR draft picks
I'm sure That Guy will pick this apart, but I got thinking about the 2001 draft when we took Rod Gardner with the 15th pick. Take a look at the other wideouts taken in the first round that year, and a few that followed in the later rounds:
2001 - 1st Round Wide Receivers (listed in the order they were taken) David Terrell Koren Robinson Rod Gardner Santana Moss Freddie Mitchell Reggie Wayne 2001 - 2nd Round Wide Receivers Quincy Morgan Chad Johnson Robert Ferguson Chris Chambers 2001 - 3rd Round Wide Receivers Steve Smith Marvin Minnis ___________ In the first round, Santana Moss and Reggie Wayne were the only wideouts who weren't busts. Think about that: Only 2 out of the so-called "top 6" of that particular draft have amounted to anything. The superstar wide receivers in the league right now, Steve Smith and Chad Johnson were picked up much later. Just an illustration of how the draft is truly a crapshoot. |

the draft is such a crap shoot cuz no matter how great someone looks in college, u honestly can't tell who will work out in now-a-days NFL where u don't have 2-3 years to develop a player especially in the first round.

Steve Hutchinson was taken two picks later by the Seahawks. But I remember wanting a wide receiver something fierce. I agree about Koren Robinson. And you have to wonder what could have been for David Terrell if he'd ever had a QB in Chicago to throw the ball to him. |

This is just more confirmation that we should draft defense early and offense late, just like Gibbs has been doing. |

i think koren robinson still may have a decent career with the vikes. he was a special teamer last year and made the pro bowl. He gets back the number 1 slot this year so the jury is still out on him despite a terrible start with seattle.

Re: Something to Ponder -- 2001 WR draft picks
Guys from 94-99 still in the league with at least 1 1k receiving season:
1994 1 21 Johnnie Morton 1995 1 8 Joey Galloway 1996 1 1 Keyshawn Johnson 1 7 Terry Glenn 1 18 Eddie Kennison 1 19 Marvin Harrison 1 24 Eric Moulds 2 4 Amani Toomer 2 13 Mushin Muhammed 2 28 Terrell Owens 5 3 Joe Horn 1997 1 7 Ike Hilliard 4 2 Derrick Mason 1998 1 21 Randy Moss 3 31 Hines Ward 1999 1 6 Torry Holt 1 8 David Boston 2 1 Kevin Johnson 2 22 Peerless Price 3 17 Marty Booker 4 10 Brandon Stokley 7 7 Donald Driver WR drafts seem to be hot and cold. 2004 was a good draft: 1 3 3 Larry Fitzgerald 1 7 7 Roy Williams 1 13 13 Lee Evans 1 15 15 Michael Clayton 2003 was deep too (Andre Johnson, Bethel Johnson, Anquan Boldin, Kevin Curtis, Brandon Lloyd) the more current you get the harder it is to judge, but WRs are VERY VERY unpredictable. the number that don't even make it to their 3rd or 4th season is crazy, not to mention those that are actually productive. There's still is a strong correlation between 1st rounders and longevity though. Its very possible for 1st rounders to flame out horribly, but it is less likely, and that's all i've been saying. Being drafted later doesn't magically protect you from being useless. |
