Portis the one player not spoken of

Last year the focus and talk was how Cportis put on weight to carry the load for the offense. Now with the additions offensively does anyone think or have they heard if he is putting more weight on ? I think he would be more effective being a more bruising runner. Finally, it seems he will not see 7 or 8 in the box and when he gets the call he'll be running over cornerbacks and safeties on his way to the endzone.

no, he needs the speed to outrun guys to the endzone. a bruiser is somewhat pointless in a speed based spread offense.

As I do completely agree that speed does outrun guys to the endzone, however Joe Gibbs is still in control and he'll (C.P.) still be punishing people. Can you name a Gibbs back that was a speedster? as opposed to a bruiser?

Gibbs has used all kinds of different backs... Joe Washington, Ricky Ervins and Kelvin Bryant come to mind as guys who weren't bruisers.

I liked Kelvin Bryant a lot. I thought injuries just caught up with him.

This is Al Saunders offense, and he's not exactly known for bruisers.

Larry Johnson isn't exactly a scatback, and he was fine in this offense.

I, personally, would like to be run first still because I like running offenses. That might not be good for our team but I don't want to see portis drop to 12 runs a game.

im a run first guy, too. portis should get between 20-25 carries a game and for the skins to win as a team should run the ball between 35-40 carries a game

I don't see why we should cut down on our runs just because our WRs are beast. In my opinion, we should be playing the same way. Run Run RUN and then burn them with the fastest trio in the league. with a top 5 TE underneath when everyone is playing up the run. Pick your poison. We shouldn't be going under 50% run ever. We should let the defense decide how they want to get beat because there is really no stopping us. I have extremely high hopes for our offense and with the GW defense I start to think we might be special. We have a top 5 RB, Top 5 Line, Top 5 TE, TOP 5 WR set, and that leaves the ? mark on the QB. I know we don't have a top 5 QB and that is the only reason brunell takes shit. He is a top 16 starter.

I think that I would be glad to see whatever makes us the number 1 offense in the league.

Bigskin, We had a top 5 RB, a top 5 line, a top 5 TE, but not a top 5 WR set last year, which caused us to not have a top 5 QB. With our new Receivers, I agree with you that we should have a top 5 WR set this year and maybe that will get us a top 5 QB. I looked at the stats from 2005 and if you take out Bulger, Leftwich and Brad Johnson, who all did not play enough to throw for over 2500 yards, Brunell was a top 10 QB in terms of QB Rating. He threw for over 3000 yards and had a 23-10 TD/INT mark. He is as good as we need to win a Superbowl.

Sorry, I guess I hijacked this thread.

Re: Portis the one player not spoken of

I think that Saunders' number one goal should be to establish the passing game as a viable threat. Once teams begin to respect the pass, the playcalling options will be limitless.

Portis is invaluble in the passing game with his blocking and recieving skills. I wish they had let him do more route running last year, but I can't really argue with the results.
