Re: John Mclain, hall Of Fame Voter, discusses Art Monk
I definitely agree about his point here, insults and name calling aren't going to help Monk's cause at all:
For all you others, I imagine a first-class act like Monk would be rather embarrassed of third-class acts like you trying to gain votes for him. Now, let me explain this real slow so you'll understand: This is directed at those of you — and you should know who you are unless your parents actually sent the e-mails — who began your comments with the kind of name-calling that'll never be able to see the light of day in the Chronicle or on this web site. You know who you are. I wish I could run the e-mails exactly like you wrote them. Imagine what Monk and Joe Gibbs would think about supposedly true Redskins fans resorting to the lowest common denominator to try to make a point. |

That said, I think that a well-reasoned, articulate, and thoughtful letter to sports reporters about Monk's credentials is perfectly fine. I doubt that many of the voters read such emails, but there's no harm in trying to persuade people in a reasonable and collected fashion. |

Re: John Mclain, hall Of Fame Voter, discusses Art Monk
I think he lost some credibility with this statement:
"I learned at an early age what Redskins fans were really like: the worst of the worst. Good for absolutely nothing. They can't be trusted. They were so ignorant they couldn't spell "class" if you spotted them the "c-l-a-s." The class and dignity that Cowboys fans always showed was foreign to Redskins fans. I mean, Richard Nixon was a Redskins fans." "Worst of the worst"?! As if there is such a thing in pro sports fandom. Each team has as many obnoxious fans as every other one. To say that fans who follow a particular team are worse than others is absurd. Too bad for him, he had a good blog going until that. ![]()

That sort of unsubstantiated, subjective vitriol is pathetic coming from a reporter, especially one trusted to vote for the Hall of Fame. He sounds like child, and an ignorant one at that. That kind of centric understanding of reality, that "our fans our the best, and there's are the worst" attitude is utterly ridiculous, and the fact that he would propagate it in a discussion about a player's legacy is almost unfathomable. It really irks me when journalists rise to the ranks of austerity, not through integrity, insight and skill, but through contentious and obnoxious reporting for the sole purpose of raising ire and causing emotion. It's far too prevalent in sports reporting, and has in fact come to dominate it. If you can't defend your local team like a local idiot, it's pretty hard to make a name for yourself. Well, Mclain hasn't had a problem doing that. Incidently (and I could be wrong here) but was Nixon really a Skins fan? Granted, he called a play in SB VII, but didn't he have season tix for the Giants? |

So what is "Todd's" Warpath screen name?
I think he was sort of kidding with that 'worst of the worst" comment, but it was completely unnecessary of him to say.

Everyone rags on fans of other teams, especially rivals.

I keep seeing this title and thinking it's about Senator John McCain's thoughts on Monk.

Re: John Mclain, hall Of Fame Voter, discusses Art Monk
"IF Monk goes into the NFL Hall of Fame, he will go in for the same reason Moon, Fouts, and Namath went in. "STATS" and nothing more. He was no leader like Irvin, nor did he work and practice as hard. Even the voter from N.Y. said that he voted for Irvin because of his work ethic and leadership he provided the Dallas Cowboys. He went in because his stats were secondary to the value to his team. Monk rightfully should go in AFTER the great Michael Irvin!!!!!!!!"
Is this guy a f*cking crack whore?!
