The official Landry watch thread
Redskins Insider
Could be a long night for the Skins and LaRon Landry. In fact, probably will be. The chips have started to fall at the top of the NFL draft and the heavy lifting will begin with Landry, Washington's top pick, now. Teams and agents can spend the afternoon studying the contracts signed by Gaines Adams - at 4th overall - and Jamaal Anderson, at 8th overall. Both are defensive players. Both contracts will contain lots of clauses, figures and language that would apply to Landry, who was taken smack dab in the middle of those two players at 6th overall. Gotta think it'll end up being a 5 year deal with about $17 million guaranteed, perhaps with some of the Sean Taylor escalators - that take the base salary to the $10-million range for each first-team Pro Bowl selection - and relatively low base salaries otherwise. (This ain't rocket science we're talking here). Going to stick my prediction of a deal by Friday afternoon, and will make more calls on this one later in the day after the sides can fully digest the details of the other top-10 contracts. |

Re: Let the slotting begin (Landry news)
It's gotta be similar to Sean's as far as escalators otherwise he will be upset. I think the signing bonus has to be the only hold up and now it should be easy to slot what it should be.

Sean Taylor's contract will have 0.0000000% influence and require the same amount of consideration when it comes to Landry's deal. Taylor can easily play his way into a massive payday. Oh yeah he's rich as hell already.

It's absolutely amazing how much guys in the top half of the first round get paid in comparison to guys in the bottom half of the first round, let alone how such salaries compare to guys drafted in the later rounds.

It is also why most GM's are not trading into the top half of the draft and is probably the reason the Skins were unable to trade down. I think this could be a potential problem for the NFL. The way the draft is designed now the bad teams get the highest picks first but with the way salaries have skyrocketed for the top picks it puts the team under even more pressure to get it right with the pick because if the guy is a bust the team's salary cap is effected even more leading to a downward spiral. Meanwhile the good teams don't have to shell out as much for their top picks and if the pick becomes a bust for the better teams the cap hit is not as bad. I don't know if there is really a good solution for this problem other than if you are an owner the first order of business is to get the best darn personelle man/scouting department you can get your hands on and build the team around that. |

Re: Let the slotting begin (Landry news)
I think people need to stop worrying about Taylor. It seems that everyone is so ready to assume he's unhappy with his contract, yet we've never seen any solid evidence from him to support that. His contract is full of bonuses and escalators that he's reached that have kicked in nice sums of money for him.

Re: Let the slotting begin (Landry news)
The latest on Landry from JLC:
Redskins Insider So the Skins PR staff just came around with the first official roster for training camp. Of course, I immediately scanned down to the L and see that, indeed, LaRon Landry's name is on it. So I asked if that was a mistake, because for him to be listed there would mean he was under contract. Word came back that it wasn't official and he shouldn't really be listed as of this very moment ... but, well, it probably won't be long until Landry could officially be listed there. Again, still guessing on this being locked down by late afternoon. |

Re: The official Landry watch thread
Let's not panic.. It seems like it's virtually a done deal and if he misses the first practice I don't think it's going to stunt his development.. At least not anymore than a paintball to the nuts did!
