John Palermo - New D Line Coach

League soruces said that Palermo, a longtime college coach with strong ties to Vinny Cerrato, signed a contract today to become the Redskins' defensive line coach. Palermo was most recently retired after spending 2007 season with Tenn. Tech. He has never coached in the NFL.
That fills out the defensive staff, which has been meeting with scouts and preparing for the draft in meetings this week led by new coordinator Greg Blache. The Redskins are expected to address defensive needs primarily in the draft, with defensive line a priority (needs at both DE and a 3-technique).
Also, former offfensive assistant Bob Sanuders will be joining his father, Al, in St. Louis.

Well, it definitely looks like Snyder already have chosen a coach.. I mean, what coach would accept the job - the job where he have absolutely no control over the staffs?

Re: John Palermo new D-Line coach.

I was hoping this wasn't going to be true when I heard the rumor yesterday. I don't know what he offers us. He's supposedly well respected, not just by Vinny. But still that's kind of crazy.

I have no problem with the rest of the staff being selected before the head coach, but they have to be good choices (Zorn). This one doesn't strike me as too good. But we shall see...Wait, I mean OMG WTF Season is Over!! AHHHH!!!

Remember that Blache has been the D-Line guy for the past few years here. He'll still keep a strong hand on them, I'm sure.

Re: John Palermo new D-Line coach.

I don't see why the f we are hiring a DL coach with no NFL experience...we have some good young DL that were coming along under Blache & GW. I really hope this college guy does not stunt that growth. This is a real odd addition to an otherwise veteran defensive coaching staff. Hopefully, like Brudlee just said Blache is still involved with these guys.

Re: John Palermo new D-Line coach.

I thought Blache wanted to bring in his guy, Larry Brooks what ever happened to that deal? That at least seamed to be a smart hire a NFL guy with years of experience......if they are going to hire the entire coaching staff before we ever get a HC in place at least make sound hires.

It would appear to me either Fassel is lined up to take the HC job REAL soon, and/or we are moving backwards at a real slow pace. Or at this point I just don't know what the hell they are doing and I'm not so convinced they do.

That will show you how much say Blache has. His guy not hired...VC's guy hired. Well Blache is only the DC of the team...it's more important that VC is comfortable with the DL coach

I thought that was a done deal. I really did. I actually could have sworn I remembered reading on RedskinsInsider. Sheesh. I've never heard of this Palermo guy in my life. He's from Tex Tech? I wanna do a search and figure out how many Tex Tech D-lineman have made it to the NFL since he's been there. Sigh....

Edit: Tenn Tech. Tenn Tech?? WTF? And the guy was "retired" prior to VC hiring him. This is a bizarre hire.

This is the link I posted about Brooks

Assistant Coaches Update - Redskins Insider

They never said it was a done deal. JLC just said the FO felt pretty sure that he was going to be it.. Apparently not.

Re: John Palermo new D-Line coach.

He was the Canes line coach as recently as 2006, could be a sign that we're after Calais Campbell?

I think college coaches should get into the NFL via position coach openings, but it's not like Palermos is really trying to break into the NFL is he?

Re: John Palermo new D-Line coach.

I have to believe this move means we are drafting someone that he worked with before. Just would not make sense otherwise. Although he seemed to have worked with some future NFL players.

Anyone know what "strong ties to Vinny" meant? Did they work together somewhere?

Re: John Palermo new D-Line coach.

I'm not sure about this guy. Sounds like Blache was on board with it though.

Maybe we'll be the first team in history to give it a go without a head coach.

Re: John Palermo new D-Line coach.

Here is a good history on this guy. Sounds like he's well respected in the college ranks; perhaps that will translate into the pros. If nothing else he'll probably be a great asset evaluating defensive talent entering the draft.

Re: John Palermo new D-Line coach.

Palermo is an old colleague of Cerrato's from Notre Dame:

The Washington Times, America's Newspaper
An NFL source said that John Palermo, who coached at Notre Dame in 1988-89 when Redskins executive vice president Vinny Cerrato was the recruiting coordinator, will be hired as Washington's defensive line coach, filling the void created by Greg Blache's promotion to defensive coordinator last month.

Palermo, now at the University of Miami, has coached in bowls in 17 of his 27 seasons. He coached Big Ten Defensive Players of the Year Erasmus James and Wendell Bryant at Wisconsin and Lombardi Trophy winner Chris Zorich, later a Redskin, at Notre Dame. Palmero was head coach at Austin Peay in 1990.
