The Officially Unofficial Man Cave/ Redskins Room Thread

Post pics, share or discuss all things Man Cave or Skins Room here.

I actually have a question for those of you who have accomplished the feat of getting your significant other to allow you to have your Man Cave/ Redskins Room. How did you do it?

My wife and I are in the process of closing on a house. One of the primary things that I was looking for in a home was a basement that I could mold into my own space with a bar, pool table and other manly amenities. Well, the house that we chose already has the basement finished, and there is no way that I can turn it into the room that I want to although my wife begs to differ. The layout just isn’t right even if I did knock down some walls.

On the other hand the house has a Family room and a Living Room on the main level. The Family room has a fireplace and leads to the back deck (where I will be doing my grilling). It is also conveniently located next to the Breakfast nook which I already permission to turn into the bar. She is also allowing me to suspend a 55in HD TV from ceiling. The problem is that she will not let me put in a pool table or add furniture that I would like to see in that room.

I keep hearing the phrase “Happy wife = Happy Life” from the realtor and others. The way that I see it though, is that I sacrificed the type of basement that I wanted for a better quality home. I should be rewarded for that. Give me one room in the house to decorate the way I see fit. If anyone has fought and won one of these battles tell me how. I appreciate any advice.

Also do not be shy about sharing your own man caves/ Skins Rooms. Once I have pics of my own I will post them.

Re: The Officially Unofficial Man Cave/ Redskins Room Thread

Moving to our cribs section.

I have a "new" man cave in my new place, it's far from finished but I'll post pics once it's done.

As far as how did I get my own room? I dunno, my wife is just cool like that. She actually really liked our last Redskins room. It was just a comfy spot in the house to be on the computer or watch TV. I do miss my old room, it was bigger and had more wall space. This time around I'm gonna have to leave a lot of my stuff packed away, and maybe just rotate some stuff in and out.

I don't have a year round man cave. But around August every year my girlfriend starts turning our livingroom into Redskin Central all on her own. Hell....I just might marry her.

Re: The Officially Unofficial Man Cave/ Redskins Room Thread

Although I don’t have all the pics here at work I can at least show some of the paint job I did in my basement a few years back. Also, I do build these jersey cases if anyone is ever interested, as I have a small side business on nights and weekends. We can build custom cases for any type of sporting collectible.

Anyways, back to man caves and the one.....I like to call home! Take a look at some of the pics I have for now and I will post more as soon as I get the chance! (These are a few years old so much has changed, and improved!)

Again, I know these pictures are horrible, and much has changed in the cave since 2 years ago when these were taken, but, at least you can admire my paint job that took me several long weekends to meticulously mark, tape off, and paint each little detail.

I will take some new pics in the next few days to show off how it looks now.

Will a pool table fit downstairs in the basement? Does your basement have a welled exit?

If anything, with the bar in the breakfast nook, and your family room just off the deck, do your best to make the family room your man cave. You should figure as long as you have a recliner to sit down in, who cares what the rest of the furniture is...as long as she puts the frilly shit in the formal living room. I mean, considering she's already given you the bar and the TV, you can give in a little as well.

I'd wait on the pool table, show her you are willing to budge on it, and you might get more of a say on the furniture for the man cave. And if the pool table fits in the basement, you just got to extend your reach...put it down there. No need to clutter that into the man cave when you can have 2 places to get away...

I've got the basement in our house, but with 2 little ones, no money to do what I want to it. We've got room for 8 people to sit comfortably in front of the old 32 inch CRT, and where I wanted to put my poker table is now full of toys. I have some memorabilia to put on the walls if I ever get the chance to decorate, but for now I'm content with a place to get away from the kids and wife to watch the game.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

I clearly took over the basement of my 3 story home when my wife and I bought it 6 years ago. I had to start from scratch as it was completly unifinished. I like to add a few new pieces each year. I was super close to building a nice redskins bar / with mounted TV’s this winter but not sure if we are going to move soon, and I think in this economy the money is safer in the bank! (Well that and the wife trying desperately to talk me out of it).

  • It would if I knocked out 2 walls, but not comfortably. They themselves (the walls) are not structural, but the “I” beam goes through both of them. If I were to knock the walls out and place a pool table there, then we would have a low clearance (7 Ft.) over the table where the “I” beam is running. Another structural disadvantage of putting the table right there is the fact that the wall for the bathroom is so close. It would be like playing pool in a hallway. There would be plenty of room on the ends to shoot, but not nearly enough on the side. If you were to take a shot that were to require you to lift the stick quickly, you would almost certainly hit your cue on the ceiling where the low clearance is. I am going to measure again but I am not sold on the idea. BTW I do not have a welled exit. I have a sliding glass door that takes you straight out. Coincidently, the pool table in this scenario would sit about 6 feet directly behind that door.
  • I am trying to make the family room my man cave. She is already going to put the “silly little frilly shit” in the formal living room. Since we have never had more than one living room before, we already have to buy new furniture to go into the family room. I was thinking rather than buy a couch, love seat, coffee table, etc., we go ahead and buy the pool table, poker table, pub tables, and bar stools to go in that room. I am trying to save myself to time and money. If I buy a new LR suit and the manly amenities previously discussed, I will be spending more money. I am still going to get what I want…eventually. I will just have to put them somewhere else (possibly an addition to the home).
  • I just might have to wait, but that is what I am trying to avoid. It’s "either or" right now (LR suit or MA’s).
  • See... you wanted or still want to do some similar things, and now you may not be able to for quite some time. This is a fresh start and I am trying my hardest to get what I want right off of the bat. I have a feeling that if I put my man cave on the back burner, then it will stay there for a long time. All I will have is timeslot in which I am allowed to borrow the family room to watch the skins. She has the rest of the house (the kitchen in particular) why can’t I have 1 room? The crazy thing is that she doesn’t mind me having my own room…I just can’t have that one.
Edit: I am kinda eyeballing this collection.

Re: The Officially Unofficial Man Cave/ Redskins Room Thread

I have another end of the basement that is not pictured (it has a different motif) that I was originally wanted to put a pool table in as well, but I have the same problem with space around it. As far as the family room my Skins room has become the family room now. It has become the most comfy room in our house to hang out and watch movies and games. I can hardly keep the family out of it.

Good luck in your quest. Hopefully she budges a bit more and you get what you want...I'll just have to live vicariously through you...
