Redskins Release Long-Time Right Tackle Jansen

Wow! Didn't see this coming. I wonder how the cap is affected.

Williams must be working out or atleast showing something they like. Plus Bridges can play both Guard and RT.

Gotta be cap or health related.

You dont cut a veteran lke Jansen during OTA's and mini-camps, you cut him at or near the end of training camp, but not in May.

My thought when I first saw it was "June 1st cap casualty". Players released before June 1st, the team is able to save the cap hit in the current NFL year, but take that hit the following year.

But since next year is currently an uncapped year, June 1 is an irrelevant date this season.

This is going to be about a 5 million dollar hit on the cap, or something close to that, but the only place the Redskins could spend that money anyway is an extension. From that point, this move makes sense.

The CBA runs out this year which has the potential to make 2010 an uncapped season. But I assure you that negotiations for a new CBA will be intense to reach a new agreement to avoid a lockout at the end of 2010.

If there are owners out there that are counting on the NFL not having a salary cap, instead of preparing for a new CBA as if there will be a salary cap, then those owners are preparing themselves to fail.

This is definitely surprise to us all!! Although he regressed greatly, it's kind of weird (and maybe sad?) to see him go after seeing him in Redskins uniform for years..

This must mean the coaches already have somebody in their mind who they think is capable of handling the RT spot..

CC/Schneed -- Another cap trigger similar to the one that pushed the cap up three million additional dollars went into effect this week, and pushed the cap up another million, according to Andrew Brandt of NFP.

So I'm guessing the Redskins saw that extra million dollars of cap space, looked at Jansen's contract, shrugged, and said "now's a good a time as any."

Will now turn over the floor to people who will argue that losing our only game hardened RT will actually improve our line.

Regardless of his current state, it is a sad day. Jansen has always been one of my favorites. Good luck John and thanks for being a stand up Redskin! Gon miss ya!

Yeah, Jansen has been with the Skins forever(plus for me he is a U of M guy). He was too oft injured and it was only a matter of time til this would have happened. It was a good move by the Skins though. If we are going to totally rebuild the line we have to start somewhere.
