Top Players in the 2010 Draft
Last year, when the Redskins picked at 13, they picked with plenty of available future superstars available (Oher, Mack, Orakpo), and actually ended up landing one thanks to reaches by Oakland, Buffalo, and Denver ahead of them, not to mention the unnatural inflation of a weakened QB class.
This year, with the Redskins picking at No. 4, there's far less doubt that excellent players will be available when the Redskins pick, so the pre-draft emphasis should be about identifying them and selecting one of the excellent players. We already have a thread about late round gems, and a thread for each quarterback that is supposed to get drafted in the top two rounds, but I thought we could use a position-neutral thread to discuss the draft stock of players that you, personally, are high on. Specifically, this thread is for players you would like to select with either the first or second round draft choice, not for players who you feel will fall in the draft. Don't concern yourself with positional need here. If you think the Redskins should seriously consider Earl Thomas or Joe Haden or Sean Weatherspoon or CJ Spiller or Dez Bryant because they could help the team, throw those names out here. The idea is to promote awareness about players who could be Redskins in the near future, even though draft discussion on the 4th pick tends to be limited to offensive tackles and quarterbacks. Links to scouting reports and draft stock updates are encouraged. Focus specifically on players who, in your eyes, are going to be superstars in the NFL someday.

Re: Top Players in the 2010 Draft
GTripp's future offensive superstars:
-RB Ryan Mathews -WR Golden Tate -WR Dez Bryant -RB CJ Spiller -OT Russell Okung -OT Trent Williams -G Mike Iupati GTripp's future defensive superstars -DT Ndamakong Suh -DT Gerald McCoy -DE Everson Griffen -DE Brandon Graham -LB Jerry Hughes -LB Sean Weatherspoon -CB Joe Haden That's an exhaustive list right now for me. I might add and subtract later. 14 players is a lot of superstars, so I can't imagine I'm right on all these guys (or even half), but this draft class is going to make a lot of teams look good, much like in 2004.

Intentional omission.
First round value, elite ball skills. Mediocre play recognition skills make his ultimate ceiling a very good, but not elite, cover safety.

Re: Top Players in the 2010 Draft
I agree with most of GTripp's picks.
I also like Michael Johnson from Georgia Tech. I think if someone makes him a 3-4 OLB, he's got DeMarcus Ware type of potential. But I don't think he'll be a Redskins since we took Rak last year. I just love the kid's athleticism so I threw him out there. Rolando McClain and Brandon Spikes will both be stud ILB's for a long time. While we're talking LBs, I also like Daryl Washington from TCU.

Orakpo has Demarcus Ware potential. They should play him just like Cowboys play Ware.

I think I'd add Berry and Pouncey to GTripps list just off the top of my head.

Re: Top Players in the 2010 Draft
I felt like with all this QB drama I should take a few hours and just watch all the video I could on the top prospects. Here is what I've decided.
#1. Jimmy Clausen: I watched 4 full games and lots of highlight videos of this kid. I must say he really impressed me. It's a completely different thing when you see a full game video, and the way he handles pressure and is able to extend plays is next to nothing. He has a decent arm and you could tell that the power on the ball was much slower in deep passes, but still nothing too question. Great acuracy and the only issue I think that will affect him is that he's always looking to his #1 receiver on the right and sometimes you'll see a wide open TE or #2 WR, and he'll still throw into coverage (and usually get's through it). *Watch the Washington vs. ND game to understand. #2. I would put Tim Tebow here, but I just can't lol.. I'll keep this empty because it's impossible to neglect how much success he had in college and even if his game won't translate, he should be here. #3. Sam Bradford: I find most of his throws are always to wide open receivers? I don't really understand how this is, but they are ALWAYS open?! Other than that, he has great accuracy there is no doubt about it but also didn't have to deal with pressure. He seems to take his time, drop back a bit check all his receivers and then throw. These alone brought him down, but I still think with the amount of yards he managed to put up in 08-09, he'll be successful. Anyways, after doing this I feel much less worried about who we pick with #4. I hope it's Clausen at this point and we let the Rams ruin the potential Bradford could have. |

Re: Top Players in the 2010 Draft
Sam Bradford to me is the best player in the draft and the rare 1st overall pick (likely) that can transform a franchise. If he goes to St. Louis I like his chances at one day playing at an elite level. If he comes to Washington to pair with Shanahan, I LOVE his chances at it.
His accuracy is not something you often see from QBs in college. If you watch Tebow and Clausen, you see receivers often having to wait for the ball on deep routes, or adjust stride to compensate for the throw. Bradford's throws are on a dime, so, so often. To me, he's the next Troy Aikman. Question is, what would Aikman have been without Norv Turner and Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin and Jay Novacek and that offensive line? Good question, that's why Bradford's better off here than he is in St. Louis. I want Bradford, bad.
