One of our coaches doesn't want Smoot back?

Per Lenny P., buried in the end of this article

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/column...len&id=1956353

Quote:
Although there is at least one coach on the Washington staff who does not want Fred Smoot back in 2005, the Redskins may designate the standout cornerback a franchise player if a contract extension cannot be reached.
What do you guys make of this??

I'd like to know what is LP's basis for saying this. Did the coach tell him? Did he hear from another coach/player? Is he just guessing?

And when he says there is at least one it almost implies that there may be a few more coaches that don't want him back

As much as I hate pastabelly, the fatass did correctly forsee that Spurrier would fail, and Gibbs wouldn't see any success his first year. Not sure if it was his insight or a lucky guess.

I really wonder who these coaches could possibly be..Steve Jackson? Dewayne Walker? I thought everyone up top was impressed with Smoots rigor in the offseason, minicamps and training camps, and more so during the season - playing hurt and all.

Smoot is turning down Shawn Springs money - he turned down a 10 million signing bonus. Anyone remember what Bailey was offered....I think turned down a 9 yr 55 million deal that included a 14 million signing bonus?

I think its too early in the offseason (which hasn't technically begun for us) to worry about Smootie. I'm confident both Pierce and him will be back happy.

He may be just guessing based on what Smoot has said to the media.

Doesn't LP have some connections into the skins organization (Cerrato) and gets pissy when Cerrato won't leak him enough info? I think I remember a rumor about that in the offseason.

I hope this one is just crap. If it was true wouldn't it rate more than a one-liner at the end of the story??? Smoot works his butt off and is one of the team leaders, why wouldn't a coach want him back?

If Smoot is indeed seeking Bailey money then he can walk.

Springs type money is more than fair.

Usually though, you ask for more than you expect right? You ask for Bailey money expecting to get Springs money instead of asking for Springs money and getting stuck with Jimoh money (for example)

Remember "The Slob" doesn't like the Redskins maybe he's hoping to create ill ill between Smoot and the Skins......... You know what would be the ULTIMATE DISASTER....the Cowboys with their weak secondary and Woodsen ritiring..could be one of the suitors for Smoot....that would be a nightmare and reason to use the franchise tag....though Smoot would be unhappy with it!..... ........

Let's consider for a moment the possibility that Williams doesn't think Smoot is a critical part of the defense. Perhaps he thinks he can plug in someone like Harris and get similar production, and use that cap $$ towards another position like DE?

I'm just throwing that out there, I love Smoot as much as anyone, but as we've seen from this defense this year, it seems that no individual is more important than the unit as a whole.

In one of the other Smoot topics I wrote something similar Matty........ If Smoot is reasonible in his salary requests re-sign him afterall he already knows the system ........but if he wants ridiculous money....Williams can groom some-one else and we have more pressing needs DE, O line, WR etc..........

LP has been wrong so many times in the past, he's lost any credibility with me. I take it as another weak attempt by him to rile up Skins fans.

As for Smoot, I hope he stays but, like with any player, we shouldn't overpay. I think it's pretty clear that Gibbs and the rest of the staff love his work ethic. He's a gamer, and plays through pain, and plays hard. One of the true "Redskins" that Gibbs always talks about. So, I think the front office will work hard to keep him.

I like Smooty but don't think he's an elite CB, William's system has a lot to do with his success as it will with whomever replaces him if he tries to break the bank, I think we have enough talent on the team right now to say we really won't mis a beat without him, signing him would give us a lot of depth if harris is retained.

I read they were offerring Smoot money that would put him in the top 10 of CB's in the league. To me that's more than fair for him. He plays well in Williams system but, talent-wise, I think he is an average to good CB. His committment and willingness to sacrifice his body make him a good (not great) CB. The team should not break the bank on him.

Plus, he does seem to get a LOT of penalties called on him.

I hope he stays 'cause he is such a great player for the fans. Besides, yelling "Smooooooooooooooooooot" at the games is so much damn fun.
