How bad will this trend get???
here is a link about Anquan Boldin skipping pratice because the cardinals didn't extend his CURRENT contract.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2046233 Read it if you want, but the point of this tread is to ask how bad is it going to get with every player seemingly wanting to "rework" their contracts. It makes me sick. the owners need to do something about this now or it is going to get worse and worse. DONT SIGN THE CONTRACT IF YOU THINK IT IS UNFAIR!!!!! IF YOU SIGN IT, HONOR IT |

Re: How bad will this trend get???
we are going to hear the argument about the owners being able to cut you anytime and no guarenteed money, but that is the reason for the huge signing bonuses now...

Re: How bad will this trend get???
I would really like to see the NFL put an end to the whole non-mantory minicamp thing. This would take this ploy out of the agent's bag of tricks. Then if someone misses a practice you can start hiting him in the bank account. The other thing that causes this proplem is that none to the contracts are guaranteed. If a team can rip up players' contracts at will then the players feel they can as well.

Re: How bad will this trend get???
This is exactly what Portis did. Bouldin and Portis are both 2nd round picks, and 2nd round picks do not get big money so now if they play well they just try and get out of the contract. The owners started a bad trend by accomidating some of these guys becasue now it seems to have opened the floodgates.

Re: How bad will this trend get???
It is the owners fault for letting this trend start. The worst one I've seen so far was the screwing we got in the Coles deal. How and the hell do you let a guy walk from his contract and still give him his 5mil bonus. I know it was part of a signing bonus but why not renegotiate the bonus for his release. Sorry for opening old wounds this just got me thinking of it.

Re: How bad will this trend get???
It's voluntary. Until it's mandatory players can do what they like. When they skip mandatory practices then you can fine the fuck out of them.
If some young buck comes along and steals their starting spot, well, that’s just too bad! |

The question is, is he being underpaid? I'm sorry to tell you this but the only time one can ask for a raise isn't during their annual salary evaluation.

Re: How bad will this trend get???
I have said it all along on more than one occasion that this is a very bad trend that the league should take a serious look at. However, as long as teams continue to accomodate players who desire to regonitiate in the middle of their deals players will continue to attempt it. I think most of us agree that something should be done to curb the notion.

The real problem here is that the owners should either make offseason workouts mandatory or just don't allow them at all. I know that there are issues with the players association, but it appears that teams really expect their players to attend. If it's important, they need to change the rules, make them mandatory, and be done with it. It's ironic that it's always the richest players that don't attend while the lowest paid players bust thier ass. It says alot about the character of the guys who don't show up.

Re: How bad will this trend get???
I can see both sides. I agree, if you sign the contract stating you'll play, then play. However, I can understand a second round pick being sick of his first contract. That's bs. Boldin put up huge numbers and I know he wouldn't make a million this year. I wouldn't play for less either. He's worth about 4 or so, he should get it. Portis was putting up 1500 yards for 450k. If you're a top ten guy at your position and you got picked in the second round. I can understand being upset.

RUNNING for 450k... Doctors save lives for MAYBE 100k.
I know, I know. I have a HUGE problem with the money pro-athletes are paid. I just think a lot of them whine when they are getting paid more money than even the smartest people in this country will ever see.
