Wow I saw them throw that screen to Moss and I was like not again that play never works very well then all pf a sudden Moss is gone and I was like god I love that play. I know plenty of us have trashed that play these last years but when exucuted right that play was beautiful.

Re: Wide Reciever Screen

I would like to see a screen thrown to Portis out of the backfield. I don't think they have run that play all season. It would get Portis out in the open with blockers in front of hi. Look what Priest did with it.

they threw a sorta screen to portis in the last game right? I think it was the one where he caught it at the right and had a couple blockers ready for him and they picked up their blocks but he tripped over the air and fell down. It is wierd he always is tripping

Screen Play
50+ yards 1
40+ 1
30+ 1
20+ 2
10+ 15
0-10- 1000

I have said this on multiple posts in the last month. We don't design enough pure screens for CP. We pass to him as like a 5th choice on the checkdown after the tackle eligible. I mean you only need run a designed screen 4 or 5 times a game and teams cannot just blitz you to death b/c it is a play designed to punish over pursuit. It trains the defense early that if they go after us they potentially could get burned. It obviously want stop them from coming after us but it plants a seed in the back of their head to keep contain.

Re: Wide Reciever Screen

Everyone just has to do their assignments in terms of blocking, and the play is great. The time I hate the play is when they throw it into one on one coverage and theres no blockers, then I think its a worthless play.

Re: Wide Reciever Screen

I remember the swing pass working very well with Betts and Cartwright when SS ran the show.

The few times they did it was sweet.

Re: Wide Reciever Screen

I've seen plenty of grumbling about the WR screen play and I don't know why people hate it. It will pick you up 3 yards if nothing else and if you catch the defense blitzing or CB 10 yards off it's has a potential home run play. Not only that but if you do it a number of times there is a potential that the CB will creep up and your WR can go deep and catch a bomb.

Put me down as one that has always been a fan WR screens...

Re: Wide Reciever Screen

the thing is that we are now getting so much cushion that the other teams are practically telling us to do it. Last year the screen never worked but Moss has just so much speed that people start to fall down as he runs by them. Maybe it will start working better but it as good as a decent run so why not do some screens. The only thing is the screen makes the defense play closer and closer as it is run more and more, as the other teams last year played close enough we couldn't get the run going and i feel the stupid 1 yard and screen passes were doing us in. maybe this year playing up close just won't be an option with our speed

Re: Wide Reciever Screen

the WR screen is a good play. it, to me is the passing equivalent of a running play. it's gonna get you a few yards and i puts the ball in the hands of one of the fastest players in the NFL.

there are some who when as soon as they see its a pass play, feel that it shud be a bomb or something. this is stupid. if anything beyond what i said earlier, the WR screen keeps the cb on their toes, forces them to make a tackle, and sets up other plays in the offensive arsenal.

so stand by the wr screen and dont be one of "those" fans...

Re: Wide Reciever Screen

Watching Santana Moss blaze past defenders was the prettiest sight since he toasted Roy Williams of the Cowgirls. I can't remember getting that excited by one play in a long time. The Brunnel to Moss connection is wonderful. I really like the Brunnel to Cooley connection also. If only Patten or Thrash would step up.

Re: Wide Reciever Screen

I still hate the wide receiver screen. The reason it blows up so often with us before is because teams were playing so close to the line that the defense was playing so tight to the line. It is still feast or famine, I don't mind one or two a game but it can also blow up on you, witness Peerless Price and his -1 yards receiving vs the Skins.

I'd like to see more attempts to get Portis out in space, use him more like Ladanian Tomlinson instead of John Riggins. Why are we not swinging more passes to CP, he should be the one dominating our offense and not Brunell. There's no excuse as to why Portis hasn't reached the end zone this year, and more than turnovers, more than cutting down the wideout screens, and more than even playing LaVar we've got to figure out how to get Portis into the end zone. Once we do, then we'll have a complete offense and be a threat to make the playoffs. Brunell can only carry us for so long, we've got to start riding Portis if we want to be a playoff team.

Re: Wide Reciever Screen

You know, I don't remember what thread it was in, but I started talking about screen passes and I got reamed for it. Quite a few people were telling me that we don't run screen passes under Joe Gibbs system, they're only quick hitches. Where are those guys at?
