Glen Davis could be a good guy off the bench but they need that sixth man to provide the scoring when the big 3 is on the bench.

Better as in more wins? division title? deeper in the playoffs?

This reminds me somewhat of Barkley, Olajuwan, Drexler then Barkley, Olajuwan, Pippen (I think that was the order). Of course, KG, Pierce, and Allen are significantly younger.

I suppose I'd be more convinced if one of these guys had a consistently successful playoff history.

Basically dude it is just better to have hope. There is some hope there this team could win a title. Remeber the 99 season in Washington when we got everyone. IT just felt damn good to think we could win a SB with that team.
