Re: Wow Those Linebackers played so well Today
I thought the guy most out of place on the first Tatum Bell run was Carlos Rogers. On a sweep the corner has to maintain outside containment on the play and drive the RB back towards the center of the field. Rogers' primary responsibility was to get his ass to the sidelines and not let Bell get the edge. But I think Rod Smith was blocking Rogers and moved him toward the center of the field, which then gave Bell the edge.
Now Rod Smith is a hell of a blocker, that's for sure. He's a complete WR. But the rookie needs to learn that if the safeties are blitzing like they were on that play, then he's the last line of defense on runs to the edge. |

Re: Wow Those Linebackers played so well Today
I wonder if this post would've even existed if we played like we did but ended up winning?
I would love to see Gregg Williams be the replacement for Joe Gibbs, that's how much I trust his decisions and his ability to call the shots. But at the same time, I still feel that LaVar should have at least some sort of presence on the field. Denver's Offense was pretty fast yesterday and we needed LaVar's speed and agility on the field yesterday. |

Re: Wow Those Linebackers played so well Today
If you have to lose, you might as well lose to an AFC team. That said, there are a number of people on this thread who refuse to assign blame to anyone. I'd have to disagree. You can't make excuses either.
For one, opposing teams seem to be impervious to committing turnovers against the Redskins. This has to stop. While we're getting better committing turnovers on offense, (down to one a game), at some point the defense must do more to force fumbles or something. The -5 differential will catch up to this team. Then there's special teams. Is it really too much to ask for our special teams to at least set up a long return so the offense can get a short field just once a game? I'm not asking for a TD return, though it sure would be nice. Betts simply finds a pile to run into on his returns, while Thrash's only positive is that he's less likely to fumble. Anybody secretly wondering why we let Chad Morton go? Even if Springs and Harris were in the lineup, one has to wonder whether they would have made any impact on corner blitzes, because even those don't seem to be effective anymore in hurrying the quarterback. I guess it's also too much to ask for some pressure from the defensive line, isn't it? The lack of a pass rush, and the inability to force turnovers are the main weak spots of this defense. If these issues aren't resolved, along with better special teams play, reality will start catching up to the Redskins in a hurry. |

I have to agree with most of that. As much as I trust Williams, and would not presume to know better, I miss the jailbreak blitz's we saw so often last season. Have we collected any INT'S? I too, would to see us on the plus side of takeaway's. Lack of pressure on the QB is driving me crazy. I wonder what.................Dexter Manley is up to (or is it in for?). We need a pass rushing end, or a couple of em'. Lavar could help with that if he can make peace with Greg's plan. I know this will change, just impatient

Bottom line. We need a pass rush, and Lavar can certainly do that. If GW does not want him in pass coverage, fine, just put him in on obvious blitzing plays. Let him make something happen.

Re: Wow Those Linebackers played so well Today
I've pretty much stayed away from the LaVar threads, for the most part, but for him to ride the pine for an entire game raises some doubts in my mind. I really think it has more to do with him not being able to play within the scheme. What's that reason?? I don't know.
I just find it hard to believe that LaVar Arrington is so incapable of picking up GWs system that he sits for an entire game, and plays sparingly in the other three. Yeah he freelances, yeah the system requires discipline and knowledge of schemes, but this man has been in the league for some years now and he most certainly has down the most rudimentary elements of playing linebacker at the NFL level. Hiis freelancing, IMO, couldn't have cost us anymore than the two big runs we gave up yesterday. Do I trust that GW knows what he's doing - absolutely! Just like eveyone else here, I have no idea what's going on, other than what GW has said, and why he isn't seeing any playing time at all. And truthfully, it doesn't bother me a whole lot either. I'm just curious as to what element Lavar could add to this defense. |

Re: Wow Those Linebackers played so well Today
I think that with Springs and Harris out, Williams was just not able to cover for Lavar. What I mean is that if Lavar is allowed to freelance a little, it wouldn't be so bad if our cover corners were in there. With our safteys having to play back and help in the passing game, we just didn't have a place for a guy like Lavar yesterday.
It sounds like Lavar is close, so maybe we get Harris and Springs back for KC and Williams can bring in Lavar more (not just 3rd and long).

Re: Wow Those Linebackers played so well Today
Ade Jimoh didnt get burned on the TD. it was a play that most teams do with a tall receiver. there isnt a corner in the league(not bailey, mcalister, rolle, madison... that can stop it consistenly).
i thought Ade played well. better than rogers. ade was on the line facing his WR. rogers was giving too much cushion for Smith. i saw alot of fight and talent in ade. i think he is better than rogers right now. also, on the first TD run, holdman and daniels had containment. rogers has to go with smith who took him out of the play. daniels completely missed on the tackle and holdman was too slow or out of position to make the play. |
