The AJFC Post-Game Ponderings

Here are a few things observed by THE ADE Jimoh Fan Club last night:

1) Game Ball - Definitely, without a doubt, goes to Clinton Portis for making the play of the game: his *defensive* tackle after the Brunell fumble that saved a sure TD. That play, along with the heads up play of the D-Line to sack McNugget at the end of the half completely changed the moods in both locker rooms and set the tone for the rest of the game. Plus, you could tell that CP was playing with heart the way he was blocking and working *away* from the ball. Team player - I'm sold.

2) Runner up would be Brunell. While I'm aware that he could sour at any moment, he's currently playing some great football. More than that, it is now crystal clear to me that Ramsey is not the answer for the Skins at QB - he needs to be traded ASAP for whatever we can get. Don't get me wrong, he's a swell guy, and has his moments, but for the last few years I couldn't figure out why our offense was so horrible. Now I know: Ramsey. Time to move on, Ramsey-homers - it didn't work out (but we can still be friends

)

3) Is it just me, or is anyone else watching every defensive play muttering "ok, c'mon, here we go - Sean Taylor, INT for a touchdown!"?? Now, I'm not at all disappointed with the defense (in fact, I think they're playing awesome), but how come every other bigtime defense (Bears, Panthers, Ravens, Bucs, Steelers, etc...) seems to have a defensive TD almost every game (or at least on a regular basis). I have to chalk this up to the law of probabilities - and the Skins are due for a bunch of defensive TD's over the second half of the season - you heard it here first.

4) Our D-Line played a great game last night (especially that play right before the first half and they way they completely stopped up the run), but the pressure is just not getting to the QB. McNugget had all day to throw the ball in most cases - just like every other QB we've gone up against. I think a pass rushing D-Lineman is priority numero uno for the offseason.

5) I wonder why D-Lineman don't always rush the QB with their hands straight up in the air. I mean, their wingspan is like 10 feet and it makes it hard for the QB to see anything. And it's scarier. I bet that if linemen rushed with their hands up every play, tipped/blocked passes would go up by 200%. And they should scream "Aaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!" for effect.

6) I think Cooley is as good as any other TE in the league - he runs routes and catches like a WR and alway bulldozes for a few extra yards. Give the front office a little credit with this pick!

7) Speaking of Cooley, that fumble was totally forgiveable; I mean the defender put his helmet on the ball perfectly - no one is strong enough to hold onto the ball in that circumstance. Further, I think it is great that Dockery made the hussle play to recover the fumble. That made me chuckle to imagine Dockery hussling down the field like that. Great play!

8) I also think Thrash's fumble is exusable too - I mean, he is soooo dependable normally - everyone's allowed an ooops from time to time. (it's easier to forgive when we recover our own fumble...)

9) Is it just me, or did it seem like Clinton Portis kept trying to bull through the linemen all night? I know that he is a good "inside" runner - but with his speed, I think at least 75% of his runs should be outside the tackles. Let the playmakers make the plays!

10) I was thinking back to all of the naysayers that criticized the Coles for Moss trade! Wow - did we ever end up on the right side of that one! Give a few more props to the front office... By the way, with the roll that the front office is on lately, I feel much better about Campbell as the future at QB. Lets just trust them on this one - they've earned it.

11) TO is such a f*cktard! The only one who is more of a f*cktard is Michael Irvin, who only backs TO because he wants to be the only one with "interview privileges." Irvin's runner up, who we'll call his "backdoor buddy", is Stephen A. Smith. Outside of the NBA, that guy is 99% talking out of his ass - inside the NBA, it's 97%. He also takes the players sides on almost every issue so he can get interviews...

12) It doesn't seem like the guys in the Sunday Night booth get along very well - they're always busting on each other. That was halarious when Theisman said "I thought you were going down to the field..." after the officals ruled the pass to Lewis as incomplete.

13) Oh yeah- THE ADE is a badass! GO ADE!

i hate stephen a. smith far worse than michael irvin; even though irvin played for dallas...

and on a side note i hate that stupid "and the twiiiins..." crap that sportscenter STILL plays... so old

I'm not giving Cooley a break on his fumble. He got hit on the left side and he had the ball in his right hand so it wasn't a direct shot on the ball. No excuses, everyone needs to stop putting the ball on the ground so much.

As for Thrash, he really seemed indecisive last night. Not that his decision making on kickoffs has ever been solid. He always seems to fair catch it when he shouldn't, and he doesn't fair catch it when he should.

1. We're seeing now, I think, that while Portis may not be the superstar running back here many of us thought he would be he is a true team player. And he'll do whatever is needed to win. He could average 5.5 yards a carry and do nothing else. Or he could average 4 and do all the little things as well. He's doing the latter, and I'm perfectly happy with that

2. I'd love to watch be able to watch practice and see how Ramsey and Campbell are progressing

3. It's not just you AJFC. By the way, did anyone listen to Ryan Clark's postgame when he said "I told Marcus and LaVar I was so happy to have them starting in front of me. Having playmakers like that makes my job so much easier" Was that a dig at Holdman?

4. Who started in Griffin's place last night? Whoever it was? Nice job. And yeah I'd love a pass rushing lineman as well. Take some pressure off the linebackers and secondary

5. LOL!!

6. I almost see a little Larry Centers in him. Just great hands

7. It felt like an eternity between the fumble and recovery. Like a fool I actually lunged toward the tv screen at the bar I was at, as if I was going to go through the screen and dive on the ball myself

8. I wish Thrash wouldn't fair catch so much. Of course, the one time he doesn't he fumbles

9. Earlier in the year Gibbs said something about Portis' shins hurting him too much for him to be able to cut outside on a consistent basis. I wonder if that's still the case

10. The Redskins FO is still getting grief because of the 2000 fiasco. I wish people would just look past it

THE ADE is like an ice-cold beer... when you're 12 and your dad lets you sip his beer you're like "ooooh gross!" but then over time you come to appreciate all of the wonderful hops and barley dancing around in your mouth and you're like "mmmmmmmmmm, Natural Light - I love you."

It's like that.

In fact, I find that the more beers I drink, the better THE ADE plays...

Excellent post AJ, though I'm in the 'Thrash makes me nervous' camp. Two things to add to the CP thread: They are finding ways to use him as a multi-dimensional player, taking advantage of his field sense, vision, and good hands. He lined up as a receiver a few times and showed great skill and concentration on the 'elbows-in' reception. Secondly, do y'all notice how Clinton gets absolutely pummelled -- speared in the back, or ankles/knees twisted -- limps off the field looking like a goner, sits for one play, and next thing you see he's carrying the ball again? The guy is 'playing his guts out' in the way that Larry Brown used to do. And he may be playing hurt much more than we appreciate.

In response to #12: Theismann is funny. I think he and McGuire stir it up on purpose; for show. I'm looking forward to the Theismann/Michaels team next year on MNF.
