Eagles trade for Stallworth

The Eagles continue to do their thing and Stallworth is an excellent addition to their football team. This was a good move by their front office and bad news for others in the NFC East.

We're worried about a guy who's usually hurt more often than he's healthy and who's season best is 945 yards??

I don't think this move changes much in the division. He's a decent #2/#3 guy, but he's not a playmaker that will keep defensive coordinators up at night.

I'm keying on the bolded part. Can't you make that argument against Brandon Lloyd and Antwaan Randle-El? Neither of them have come close to cracking the 1000 yard mark.

What Stallworth gives the Eagles is a serious deep threat. No he's not a stud. But he will stretch defenses. If you don't have CBs who can run with him and Reggie Brown (and right now I think we only have one, Carlos Rogers) then you'll have to give safety help over the top. That presents a challenge when you have to watch the middle of the field for LJ Smith who has speed, and you have to get on top of speedy Brian Westbrook in a hurry or else he'll bust one on you.

Stallworth's presence opens up the field for the Eagles just as Lloyd and Randle-El do for the 'Skins. It's not like they just signed Jerry Rice at his peak, but it's an improvement.

It won't just be slurping. They are our biggest competition this year.

They'll be leading the division on December 1. Then they have to play AT NYG, AT Dallas, and AT Washington. That's when they'll fall on hard times and we'll need another Gibbsian push in December to overtake them.

Sometimes a decent #2 is just the trick for an offense. Not to mention the fact that Stallworth will for the first time in his career have a much more consistent quarterback throwing him the ball.

This year, they have that same coaching staff, that same QB, basically that same offensive line, that same explosive running back, but with Stallworth and Reggie Brown at WR.

You tell me which is tougher. Nobody should let the Eagles sneak up on them this season.

I would add to that a dangerous tight end in L.J. Smith, along with a healthy Corell Buckhalter backing up Westbrook.

Now, the defense was really what enabled the Eagles in their NFC Championship years -- I think there's been a steady, moderate decline in the overall capability of their D, but it's still a force to be reckoned with.

Difference is we don't need Lloyd or Randle El to come in and light things up. Philly is in a more desperate situation, you don't bring in a guy this late unless it's due to injury or you have serious doubts about the guys you already have.

Stallworth isn't quite the deep threat he was when he came into the league due to his injury problems.

While he could have an impact for them, I'm just not all that concerned.

stallworth is much better than anything they've got, and his 945 yards came on the other end of Aaron Brooks. McNabb is ever-so-slightly better.
