Draft History

Maybe the Redskins SHOULD trade all of their picks after the 1st 2 rounds.. A look back since 1990 (Washington Redskins) they have drafted all of 9 players in the 3rd round or below (Cooley, Dockery, Shawn Barber, Derek Smith, Stephen Davis, Frerotte, Wycheck, McCardell, B. Mitch) that had serviceable NFL careers.

That's mind blowing, 9 players in 16 years!!! 9 out of 90 players drafted in the 3rd round or below by the Redskins had moderate success, that's beyond pathetic. Something is SERIOUSLY broken at Redskins Park if those numbers have transcended coaches (Gibbs, Pettibon, Norv, Schott, Spurrier, Gibbs), GM's and owners.

This is not a new problem, it's one that someone needs to identify and rectify.

Anyone else disturbed by these facts?

I'm not dead but this team is dead to me...but now that McCloughan is here they may have new life!

Jay Gruden = Zorny McSpurrier
Kirk Cousins = Next Grossman

Re: Draft History

I'd like to see how it compares to the other teams in the league before I freak out.

Re: Draft History

Rock Cartwright and Robert Royal were also late round picks drafted by the Redskins who are "serviceable."

Re: Draft History

Robert Royal was a total joke for the skins. He lost the game against the chargers for us in 05 entirely on his own. I remember wanting him to die.

I don't think he was a total joke. He wasn't a quality starter, but he was serviceable. If you don't believe me, maybe you will take Joe Gibbs word for it (who seemed to think enough of Royal to designate him our starter). While the Chargers game was a disaster for Royal, no player should be defined by one bad game.

And he did rebound the following week with a good effort against the Rams.

So he had a bad game, big deal, who doesn't at some point?

You are absolutely right SGG, he shouldn't be defined by that one game. He is an average tight end in this league, but let's not crucify him over one freaking game.

Re: Draft History

It's all in the water here in DC. It's not like the players we drafted were not wanted by anyone but us, for some reason things just didn't pan out. Many of the players we sometimes point out as busts would have been taken at the same position by other teams. Michael Wsstbrook, Heath Shuler, Desmond Howard, there was plenty interest around the league in these players based on their collegiate careers, but for some reason they just didn't work out well for us.

Re: Draft History

I don't see much relevancy in pointing to picks we made 10+ years ago.

How does that apply to today? It's a totally different organization from top to bottom.

I only made mention of these players in particular because they were an overall part of the history of high draft selections we had high hopes for. The FO personell may be different now, but it's draft history is relevant to the same team. Same label, different flavor.

OK, but compared with all the rest? That's like 3 out of ... infinity.

The guy who made the Pierce and Marshall pick is gone.

Something about the past being the best indicator for future performance?

Still, I agree with you in that I'd like to see what the numbers are for other teams. I do know this though, the successful teams seem to be ones that are Masters of the NFL draft.
