Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
As much as I like Vilma who would be perfect for Williams system, it is very tough for us to swap picks, I would love to send Portis for Vilma but as Michaels said we are married to him, and as he said you do not give huge contracts to backs because they can be had, but we haven't figured that out yet, just like we couldn't figure out that every back who takes the field in Denver becomes a household name, until he leaves.
The best way to go about a possible deal like this is to trade down a couple of times and obtain a couple of 2nd round picks with teams picking higher than the Jets, then maybe make the swap and have the Jets throw in a second day pick, but that would require savey which is something we don't have and every team knows it, so right now it's tough to get favorable deal done because teams will wait us out knowing we will give up the farm in a deal when the shoe should be on the other foot. Every GM in the league knows GM Joe is out to prove he has a keen eye for talent, so much so that he see's things in players that knowbody else see's and is willing to pay an astronomical price for his keen insight on talent when knowbody else is willing. So now we are stuck between a rock and a hard place, do we trade down and address more needs? Or do we use our only valued pick to get a bonified D-lineman which will not be available if we choose to trade down? It would be a nice year to have all our picks or possibly a few extra, we could really load up, but we had to have Lloyd who is not better than the top 3 WR's coming out, we have Portis who is not better than the top back coming out, we had to have Duckett and who know's what his value is, it was zero for us, and yes we had to give up another pick for a LB who barely saw the field but we just had to have him, [although what I saw of him I liked] but we did once again overpay for another player. In closing I have no real expectations that we will do anything productive in the offseason, stupid is as stupid does, and so long as the current staff is in place that's how it will remain in the personel department! |

jimmy williams? he didn't exactly shut anyone down. the guy we should have taken was richard marshall (NFL.com - Richard Marshall).
he was there for our #53 pick, he had a great year, and he's the guy i wanted for value at that spot well beforehand too. hell, he picked campbell off twice in the one game he played against the skins this year (even though one got overturned due to a BS roughing call, but i can't complain about that). |

I think Portis has proven himself to be more than just a Denver system back.

[sarcasm]What? You think just because he broke the Redskins single season rushing record that that makes him more than your everyday system back? Obviously anyone could've broken that record, sheesh.[/sarcasm]

I don't care what linebackers you have. If you're getting manhandled at the line of scrimmage, a superstar LB making the tackle 5 yards later is still a huge problem. |

Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested? (rumor)
The main problem with this deal as it is outlined is dropping down to #25 is too far of a drop and using the NFL points chart it doesn't add up. The Jets would definitely have to sweeten the deal a bit more.

Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested? (rumor)
After reading the rest of the posts, I'm genuinely surprised at the number of people who would accept this deal.
Betts for a 2nd or a 3rd is fine. Betts straight up for Vilma is fine. But losing the #6 pick? NO WAY. That pick is gold. |

I would take the deal if the Jets sweetened the deal with another quality pick.

Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested? (rumor)
Unless we think that we can get another solid DT or DE with a later pick in the first round, or with a high second round pick, I really think we need to keep the 6th pick to address the DL.
If we get a solid defensive lineman, then I think whoever is playing linebacker will be better. In fact, I still believe that Lemar Marshall can produce for us if his shoulder injury isn't nagging him all season. He had a good season for us in 2005, and I believe he can return to that form next season, especially if we can get a guy like Branch to clog up some holes. In addition, although Vilma is attractive, I do not think we should go after him for the reasons I just stated. However, I also do not think that we should go after him because we're getting rid of a guy who WANTS to be a Redskin. Ladell knew that he could leave the Skins and go start for another team, but he is choosing to stay with us. He's passing up a big pay day for back up money, cause he wants to be a part of this team. After the season that he had last year, I think trading him will cause more friction between the front office/coaching staff and the players. Portis always speaks so highly of Betts, and while Vilma is a stud, I think it's more important that we start showing the rest of the team that we're willing to take care of our own, and award them when they play well.
