I can't believe how well Portis has done considering most of the teams admit that Brunell isn't a threat and they stack the box against him. To have 800 yards half way through the season is a great accomplishment considering the circumstances. Really, imagine where this team would be without Portis right now. I hate to say it but I don't think we would have won any games without him.

just recently i had to argue he's our our offensive mvp by far (instead of Gardner?), and he was getting frighteningly little recognition in the gameball thread, even tho he ran for 150 yds against a tough run defense AND had a perfect QB rating!!?? |

[QUOTE] Ok, totaly different time period is what had me messed up. I got the idea that it was very recently. My bad.

I think one of the main things for those showing unrest with the trade until the past couple weeks is because of Portis' large numbers of fumbles in such a short span, with 2 or 3 of those resulting in touchdowns by the opposing team. Hopefully gibbs will adapt the system a little bit more towards portis's style and Portis will learn not to ever run 5-6 yards backwards.

Portis has over 800 yards after 8 games. The Redskins had 1,653 TOTAL rushing yards in 2003. He's on a pace to come just under that figure (1620).
Granted, it was Spurrier's offense, but that's still quite an accomplishment! Oh, and by the way, no Redskin has ever rushed for over 1,440 yards.....ever! Davis set the record in 2001 with 1,432 (I think). Bottom line, Gibbs will adapt to his players' strengths, and if that means more "zone blocking" runs, so be it. He adapted from "Air Gibbs" to the power running game for Riggins, so if he realized that he needed to adapt again for Portis, then good for him. Also, I'd imagine that if the passing game actually gets going, Portis will have even more success. |
