you're right Goat. But I still say we keep Taylor and go after a couple of value guys than cut what would be the hottest FA if not for injuries for another "big" FA. I would like to see us get value out of Taylor if possible. Tired of getting burnt on these big FA's.

First we need to see what position in the draft is the strongest and what positions we need... The draft has a lot of centers, and tackles. A decent amount of WRs. No break away speed backs. A lot of great DEs very few DTs, a good amount of OLBs. And a of amount of corners. The free agent market has only one really good DT,a really good DE, a lot of OLinemen, and couple real good OLBs,and a proven punter
** and a good amount of corners

Browns cut Eric Young, might be worth a camp invite.

The Lions cut 5 starters today, including guard Ed Mulitalo. I wanted the Skins to sign him last year when he parted ways with the Ravens. I wouldn't mind giving him a look, although he's getting up there in age.

Well, if there is a good crop of FA OL and the draft is supposedly quite deep there as well; and we all know that a major roadblock for us is our OL; isn't this the year of the off-season OL upgrade?

I mean, why not?

Hed be a good replacement for Kendall. He's certainly not a better guard than Kendall when healthy, but Kendalls knees are going to give out sooner or later and for a simiar price (close to vet min), id much rather have Mulitalo.

wow i wasnt aware of that. Prior to the draft, i really thought Young was a great mid-round steal who could start right away if needed... so much for what i know. As far as us picking him up, he certainly couldnt be more of a disappointment than Rinehart. Hopefully the skins will look at him.

If we dump Taylor, we get all $8.5 million back towards the cap (if i understand it correctly)

But Taylor's future all depends on how the FO rates Blades, Wilson, and Jackson to see if they think they can start next year and if so how much of an impact can they make? Remember Blades started 5 games, and 4 of the last 5 at SLB so he does have some experience, but he did make some mistakes, but if he can start at OLB, there goes washington...

if the FO is comfortable with Wilson and/or Jackson at LE, Carter and Evans can stay at RE....then we can cut Taylor and Daniels we'll save $10.8 million towards the cap, n now we'll be $7.8 million UNDER the cap (currently $3 million over)...Cut Springs and Washington, there's another $10 million in cap space right there, so now we're around $17.8 million UNDER the cap...

Go give Hall the $4 million a year that he wants and have him starting opposite of Rogers, with Smoot playin' nickle and Tyron getting more PT at either nickle and dime backs.

Then we caneither go spend another $2-5 million a year on Jahri Evans RFA, G for Saints, or Jason Brown RHA, G but can play C, for the Ravens. Both will only be 26 by the start of the season, Evans is a 3 year starter, and Brown is a 2 year starter. Both Saint and Ravens gonna try hard to sign em, but if we can steal one away for under $5 million a year, then they could play either G spot and we should (if all goes to plan of course) be set there for 4-5 years

So now we are still around $9 million under the cap....go spend a few bucks on some depth at LB, OL, DT and save some for the rookies, and we'll still have money left over! that's not including all the other scrubs that the skins will cut.

Like i've said i haven't be a strong advocate of playing in FA, but we don't have a lot of draft picks, and also we are signing YOUNG FAs, not some 29-35 year old FAs past their prime.

Then in the draft we can take OT (most like Britton), or trade down to pick up more picks.....still pick up a G/C in the 3rd round to hopefully take over for Rabach or Thomas in a few years (if Rinehart is a bust)....then next year we can load up on the front 7 in the first 3 rounds

Yeah, he's had some injury concerns which have hampered his start in the NFL. But I think he's ok now, and is worth a look

The best player wins the position.

Call it a 'rebuilding season' from tomorrow on.
While I think this approach works in Basketball, I do not believe it will deliver results in the NFL. The reason is that there is very little to gain from a top draft pick, unless it turns out to be a franchise quarterback. Otherwise, top picks drain the salary cap and are rarely game changers (look at Chris Samuals, Lavar Arrington, LaRon Landry). A team that dumps veterans in this manner could end up in a losing rut that lasts a half decade.

I think you're confused about the DE situation. AC is the starting right end and Evans (in the absence of Jason Taylor) is the starting left end. Wilson and Jackson would both be backups regardless. I really can't imagine Daniels on the 53 man roster... IMO he's the first veteran who should be cut based on age, injury history and savings. I'm also hopeful we dump JT to free up that truckload of cap space. But here's the catch, DE is not a position we can likely upgrade much this year. Evans, according to some FA experts, is one of the top ends available this year and maybe the top 4-3 left end available. Meanwhile SLB is most likely the one open spot on defense for '09... that's where we should spend our FA money. A guy who can stop the run, be good in coverage and blitz the QB will keep this defense in the top 5. I like Suggs and think we should throw our FA money at him but anyway SLB is the position to upgrade this year IMO.

We should go after igor olshansk at DE, hes been in a 3-4 but he'll be fine in a 4-3.
