Met Norv Turner the other day!
Apparently Norv Turner is a regular at the Starbucks I manage. I heard he frequents there, but haven't seen him until a couple days ago. I heard a voice say "I'll have a Venti Americano" and when I looked up, there he was with his Chargers shirt on...no doubt heading off to practice...it was around 5:15-5:30am. I looked at him and said, "this will be the only time I say this, and I apologize for bringing it up, but it's great to meet you Mr. Turner. I've followed your career for a long time, and as an avid Skins fan, I thank you for what you did for us". He chuckled and said "Skins fan huh"...with a slight shake of the head as if to say "I hate that team" haha. We then started talking about random things including my staff at Starbucks and how he enjoyed 1 of them in particular, and we started talking about customers and told him his wife Nancy (whom I met a few days before) was a great customer and we appreciate their business.
All in all, seems like a great guy. Two things struck me about him (other than the fact he was friendly) 1- he was taller than I expected, and 2- he has a VERY quiet demeanor. I expected him to have a louder presense. There are some other regulars I'm waiting on to come in, including Trevor Hoffman, but since Norv was an ex-skins coach, it was the highlight of my day.

Sorry, but I can't help thinking that if I ever met him, I would ask "How come you can't win close games?" before I could stop the question from coming out.

Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
i think the quiet demeanor has something to do with his lack of success as an N.F.L head coach. there are definitely times when you have to bring it. just listen to some of the older skins, and coach Joe would let loose when needed

I remember him well in DC and still as a Charger HC, looking like his face was gonna explode from going nuts during a game. He just doesn't appear to be able to manage man that well as a HC. Kinda like Marty, just can't get over the hurdle. Norv has a great OC mind, just don't think he's suited well in the HC role.

I really wanted to ask him what he thought of Snyder, but as the manager representing a huge corporation, I didn't think that was appropriate.

I'm not sure that you would have gotten an honest answer.
Cool for you. I'd like to meet Norv.

You should of treated him like a step father that abused you emotionally, and spit in his "Venti Americano".

Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
LOL...Norv did nothing to us...he was merely a pawn in Snyder's fantasy football team.

Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
Why does he hate the very team that he led for so many years? If he has a problem with the owner that's cool, but to say that he hates the team just brings so many doubts to his work ethic.

I saw a sideline highlight of Norv during the playoff win over Detroit in '99. After a 3 and out, Norv went off on the O-line. Though it doesn't appear to happen very often, he lights it up from time to time. |

I have that date marked on my calendar and it better be a win for us. We have played him once as a coach of another team and that was when he was coach of the Raiders. We lost that game and are now 0-1. We need to even the score.

Norv could have done much better if the ownership question was not in doubt in the early to mid 90's. Jack Cooke should have left the team to John Cooke and maybe the ownership could have focused more on actually rebuilding the team. |

Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
Also, the Heath Schuler bomb itself pretty much messed up Norv's tenure from the get go. He got stuck with going with Frerotte as his starter, not much more you have to say. I liked Gus, but he wasn't ever going to be a HOF caliber type.

Re: Met Norv Turner the other day!
John Cooke did not want the team in the passionate way that his father did., and if he had become the owner, he would not have cared two hoots. Jack Kent Cooke did us a favor.
