In light of the havoc disasters wreck a better policy IMO would be "set rigorous standards, regulate strongly, and penalize severely those who fail to meet standards, and utilize our resources effectively." There is no excuse to cut corners in these matters.

I'm sure the goverment has regulation after regulation and I would not be surprised if there is not a goverment official on each offshore rig. I have a buddy who has done some work on offshore riggs and when I see him I have a bunch of questions I want to ask him. He does not work for an oil company but he is one of the top guys brought in when they have something like this and he watches over the diver crews to make sure they a safe and follow all the safty rules.

I believe BP is responsible for the entire cleanup bill based on laws enacted after the Valdez spill.

Which was just a compromise in order to help get the energy reform motions going. This is a live illustration of the costs of compromise when it comes to these things. What if 5 new rigs go up, 3 are built by the same company, have a design flaw and all of them end up failing, or even just two at once?

Meanwhile, just like the bailout, the Republicans will pretend that they never wanted it or pushed for it most likely.

That will be spinless republicans who like to take the easy way out instead of fighting for what they believe. From what I read it seems we have already learned from this spill and what went wrong. If what I read was correct these oil rigs have to emergency cut off valves. The main valve will autmatically shot off the flow of oil when something goes wrong and that valve failed. The back up valve has to be shot off manually but the rig collapsed around the valve and they cannot reach it. If you remember when this first happened they thought we would just have a small oil spill but now that they cannot shut off these valves it has become a real mess.

If the rig does not fail, BP profits. But when a mistake happens it affects us all.
That's a trend I am getting tired of. It is not capitalism at all.
Invade Iraq if they greet us a liberators then Big Oil is super wealthy. If it fails we are all in danger from terrorists.

You need to re-read Adam Smith, you really don't understand what pure capitalism is. I have seen you post a few times with your understanding of Capitalism, once in relation to outsourcing to China. Each time you describe capitalism incorrectly.

Passion is good, but again I ask you, once this incident occurred, what could BP do that they haven't done?

To me, it seems like they have committed to using all there resources to stop the leak, they have sent teams to their other rigs to look for any signs and for any clues, and they have acknowledged responsibility.

Ok while at lunch I was reading the papper and it occured to me that I was wrong and Obama has been jsut sitting there doing nothing for the last 7 days. While this is all on BP our goverment has the duty to protect us and Obama is failing. Finaly yesterday Obama (after 7 days of doing nothing) has committed all the resources they have to containing the spill. Ok, but why did you wait 7 days when it is now just off the coast and not when it first happened? Then on my way back to the office I hear Obama on the news say he will get his first reports from people on the ground later today. OK now its 8 days and he is getting his first reports from people there. Wow, great response time. I hope my local firedepartment is just a little faster. I'm not blaming Obama for this but I do blame him for not responding sooner and using the equipment the federal goverment and states own.

So what part don't I understand? People keep crying capitalism while they making money, but cry socialism when they go broke? Making money and ogin broke are both a part of capilaism. How can we say our system, is better than everyone else when we are not truthful about our capitalism?

why should our government use equipment to help a mulit-national Iranian revolution starting BP Oil?
