Every year me and select family members like to get each other gag gifts, just because it's better than trying to get something meaningful and you end up screwing it up for some reason.

I actually love this idea, especially for in-laws. I hate to say it, but my family doesn't know my wife and her family doesn't really know me (well). We usually end up taking back everything each other's families give to us. This might be a good idea.
