A press conference is set for July 28 at 10 a.m. MT, where Sanders will appear with his medical team. The unusual inclusion of doctors has fans and insiders believing that Sanders may cite health issues as his reason for stepping down.

Sanders, 57, has been away from the team since April due to an unspecified condition. He’s been recovering at his Texas ranch and has not attended spring or summer camps. This absence, combined with his visible weight loss and history of blood clots, has many worried about his long-term health.

Health Concerns Have Shadowed Sanders Since April
In 2021, Sanders had two toes amputated due to complications from blood clots. He underwent multiple surgeries in 2023, and by May 2025, reports claimed he had lost 14 pounds. In a July 20 video, Sanders said, “I’m still going through something… I ain’t all the way recovered.”

Despite this, he made a public appearance at Big 12 Media Days on July 9 and visited son Shilo at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ training camp on July 23. Still, many believe the upcoming press conference signals a step back from coaching.
