Suicide is the ultimate manifestation of a "disease" known as depression. If you have never had to deal with a family member with depression, or dealt with it yourself, you have no idea what a grip that disease can have on a human mind. It is a mental illness on par with schizophrenia.

For the folks that do carry through with suicide, generally their illness makes them truly believe that ending their life will benefit others. They do not see that it will harm others, rather they see their continuing to live as harming others. Warped as it is, that is their perception.

It is easy to get angry with those with depression and to call their act self serving, since outwardly this disease seems so self-imposing, but you should not underestimate how sick these people really are and how helpless they are to control the problem. They need help, not anger.

This is an excellent post. People who see it as a selfish act are observing the reality after the fact, but I don't think many people who haven't been to that depth can understand the true amount of rationalizing that takes place leading up to a depressed person's suicide.
