The Skins could use the transition tag in 2018 which would be a 20% increase to 2017 or $28.78 million. The transition tag would allow Cousins to get offers from other teams but the Skins can match any deal and Cousins would have to sign it regardless. If he plays under the transition tag, he would be a free agent in 2019 as the Skins are unable to tag him the 4th time under the CBA. I am fully aware of his disdain for Allen/Snyder but minus the cap ramifications the Skins do have control the next 2 years although Cousins has the leverage financially. The caveat here is that if the Skins don't match offers in 2018 under the transition tag, they would receive no compensation for losing him. This is not an ideal situation but having Cousins under control for 2 years and no future cap hits is not as bad as it seems especially if the cap continues to increase annually.

First post but a long time lurker.
As smart as this sounds, SF will be able to structure a deal that we will not be able to match. They will have considerably more cap space than us. What we can do is franchise him again at 34 million. My opinion is that if he performs well, they will do it. To all those that think we should trade him, for what ever we can get, if we just let him go, in 2019, we will get a third round compensatory pick. Screw it, we can win a Superbowl by then.

Now that he's signed the tag he can be traded. Maybe that was the plan. Obviously no love lost between Kirk and Allen. Read somewhere Scott wanted him signed last year, Allen didnt.
I've put up with a lot more crap from an employer than he has for a lot less than $24M per year. Kirk can shut up, grow, up, and nut up. Maybe buy himself a Bentley to help take away the pain. I'm about to start calling him Kim, as in Kim Kardashian.

Kirk says he didn't ask for a trade, do you believe him?

Kirk Cousins of Washington Redskins says he reached out to owner Dan Snyder to understand team's direction

He needs to come down a little and the Redskins need to come up a little and get this thing done already. KC also needs to realize he has a good set up here. The grass isn't greener in SF. There are a lot of QB's that could put up good numbers in this offense.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

I tend to believe his version of things too. If he was truly disgruntled and wanted out, he didn't have to sign the tag. He could force the issue if he wanted to. Some say he's too nice for his own good so that's why he won't put up the stink necessary to get traded, I don't buy that at all. He knows exactly what he's doing. The team wants him for the right price, and he wants to be here for the right price. He's not going to give a hometown discount and he shouldn't have to.

I listened to the entire Kirk Schefter podcast. I absolutely believe Kirk when he says he did not demand a trade. It would be entirely out of his character. I think his entire approach is to extract as much value out of the Skins as he can, so he can remain there at a fair number.

I believe him.

All this talk about him demanding a trade and not signing with the Redskins while Bruce Allen is the VP just seemed a bit out of character. He just doesn't strike me as a guy who's going to purposely tell the media he dislikes someone of authority with the company he works for.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

I basically believe him, I doubt he demanded a trade, but I am sure he brought up the question of one. I also hope this is him walking back down off the ledge, and leading up to him signing a long term deal.

Between this, and the news of him working with Pryor, those are two positive developments in the public relationship between him and the team.

Seriously, I can't understand the jerking around on the team's part. This situation irks me more than the McCloughan thing.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

Also, in reading his quotes, basically he is saying "I'll sign when the number matches the FT or when the team lets me hit an open market and I see what number that is."

That's how the business side of the NFL works.

Quote:
"This entire process from a contractual standpoint has been framed by the franchise tag rules," Cousins told Schefter. "It hasn't been framed by my market value. I would be content to go to the market and see what the value is and settle for what that is. But because of the tag rules and the team's use of the tag, that just hasn't taken place.

I am at that point too, if we over pay so be it. It's the hardest position in football to fill; if we loss him we are the Browns looking at Geno Smith as our starting QB; barf.
