I just threw up in my mouth a little when I read that.
Honestly, McCain had flashes here and there -- frustrating player in that respect. Got beat too often for a starter. It feels to me like the safety position hasn't been emphasized in recent years. I can't think of a safety in the game now that I would characterize as dominant the way that guys like Ed Reed, Earl Thomas, Ronnie Lott, and, of course, Sean Taylor were. Derwin James, and a handful of other guys like Minkah Fitzpatrick are good (even very good), but teams aren't really designing plays to avoid them. It's such an awesome position (to me, at least) when done right.
