I don't want to come across as a pro athlete apologist, but I can understand these guys having attachments to numbers.. KWII (while I am glad he's not a Redskin) I would assume wants #80 in honor of his father wearing it in the NFL.. A lot of these guys have worn their numbers for years for reasons unbeknowst to us and if they are willing to fork over thousands of dollars for it then I am not going to judge them for that.. I can understand the sentimental thing too, but I also agree that the number stays with the veteran unless he decides to give it up, regardless of if he is a star or a back-up. Perhaps someone like SkinsnCanes can confirm this, but didn't Portis wear #28 at Miami? That means he only had #26 for 2 years, which IMO isn't long enough to be sentimental, and obviously #28 for the Skins is off limits....so just pick a new number, dammit!
