Re: Quick Recap
The TV broadcast of the game on WUSA 9 was one of the worst I have ever seen.
Theisman and Patrick were terrible; they didn't know the names of players, they consistently reported the wrong down (which was made worse by the fact that the down/yardage were only occasionally shown on-screen), and they gave inconsistent updates about injuries. Brett Haber's discussion of Jason Campbell's injury was confused as well. Get Bram Weinstein on TV! The guy does some of the best Redskins reporting around. |

You're so right. I don't remember seeing the down/yrds shown on screen. It was so frustrating. Then Theisman ripped the player that hit Jason Campbell as if he did it on purpose. I mean it's not flag football. |

Re: Quick Recap
I agree that things definitely are looking better are defense and the O-Line did better this week, as well.
Not much discussion of Cooley yet on this thread. I though he look like the Cooley of two season ago, again. Maybe getting engaged will be good for him. Keep him in at night studying film. |

Re: Quick Recap
And we have to remember that this was against a pretty serious D--and Pitt was stunting in midseason form, apparently.
Playing these good Ds now will help us down the road, even if it means we at times look worse than we are. (Note: don't freak out too much if the Ravens hold our O down--they're good.)

Of course, Brunell has his own drawbacks. He holds the ball too much and he melts under pressure. But, his arm looked pretty strong last night. He plays better at the end of games when he HAS to throw the ball. Before that point he plays too cautiously. It's a tossup. Bottom line is that without Campbell we won't have much offense. He needs to play. I would let Brunell backup based on the salary cut he took. I really don't see Collins as an improvement anyway.

Re: Quick Recap
I just got a chance to watch the game on the replay on NFL Network. Some quick observations:
1. Campbell was looking FANTASTIC before the hit. 2. Starting O Line showed some good improvements over week 1. 3. The D has yet to yield a TD in 8 qtrs (VERY IMPRESSIVE). 4. Redzone defense is stoudt! Overall I thought the first team started to show a little promise and executed well on the first two drives. Has anyone else noticed the "lack" of penalties in these first two games against the O and the D? I think they have really focused on not killing themselves with stupid penalties.

Good point on the lack of penalties. Looks like the coaches have these guys focused mentally. |

Re: Quick Recap
Even if Campbell got hurt, and say he is out for the first few weeks of the regular season, or worse. Todd Collins has looked the best out of all our quarterbacks so far.

Re: Quick Recap
Everyone wants to bash Brunell because they want to bash him regardless of his play, but he looked good to be on Saturday. He was 5-12 but his incompletions were drops by WRs who won't be on the team and his INT was a bobble by a WR on a pass that was right between the numbers. He threw longer passes accurately and with a LOT more zip than Collins (who was good at managing the game by playing conservatively). In fact, Brunell had the longest completion of the 6 QBs from both teams that saw the field, 36 yards.
Campbell Yards per Completion = 12.5 Brunell Yards per Completion = 11.2 Collins Yards per Completion = 7.4 Who can't throw deep? Collins' TD pass wasn't because he made a great throw, it was because he had ALL day and the secondary couldn't cover Lloyd that long. Seriously, he stood there forever until he threw to Lloyd. Campbell is the QB who got the ball in scoring range on that drive anyways. I'm not taking anything away from Collins' accuracy (even though it looks like he's tossing passes to his kid in the backyard), but he's playing Brunell's "game" with the short passes and you don't seem to hate him for it like you do Brunell. Plus, Brunell looked good. On the last drive, he brought us into FG range for the gamewinner in 1 minute, he showed leadership and poise. We would've won if not for the offensive pass interference and then the WR who let the pass bounce off him into the defense's hands. If Campbell does go down, I want Brunell in. He's more experienced and while he can't last a whole year, he'll be the better of our backups. |

Patrick called Campbell Doug Williams once too and no one caught it (on the broadcast). |

Re: Quick Recap
The 36 yard pass from Brunell to Hoag on 4th down was pretty nice, even the biggest Brunell haters have to give him some credit for that throw. Down the middle, split the coverage, and dead on accuracy.
I think MB will be fine if we needed him for a spot start, but at his age he just wears down too quickly to last an entire season as the starter. |

I think you also have to take into consideration that Brunell had to play catch up towards the end of the game that might have inflated that statistic.

Yeah I was so pissed about that, I had to keep on paying attention to the markers and all that. I remember them showing the downs and stuff once in a while and I was like WTF why not do this the whole game?

God forbid Campbell goes down, but if he does, we have more of a chance with Brunell than Collins, a QB who has been in 12 years and averaged 1.42 starts a season. If there's a longterm need for a backup to start, we can always just ride Mark as long as we can and then go to Collins in relief. In that situation, our season would be shot anyways. |
