If you look back at the Patriots when they were winning Super Bowls, you noticed their defense was incredible at the point of attack and LBs. It's a main reason why BB hasn't paid huge money to DBs, and a big reason why he let Asante Samuel walk. Vrabel, Seymour, Bruschi, McGinest, Coolvin, Johnson have all been beasts. The only DB to note on those squads is Ty Law, and Harrison was at the end of his career. I've always thought AS was overrated even back in NE. He jumped routes all the time and capitalized.

Right now, we simply aren't getting the pressure we need to up front and it shows.
I can see that to a certain extent. Who do you think is the weak link? I only ask because we had a ton of sacks last year with essentially the same group.

I personally think it's scheme to be honest with you. In 16 years of coaching, Haz has never coached a top 10 defense if I'm correct. (correction: he's had 1 year out of the 16 that his defense was in top 10) To be fair to Haslett though, it's been 11 years since he's ran the 3-4 in Pittsburgh. He's mostly ran the 4-3 the past decade. It probably is a huge reason why Haslett wasn't Shanny's first choice as DC. I would like to see our DL get more of a push up the middle though, but I understand those guys don't have the size that Haloti Ngata does, but it would be nice. Now, I definitely think we could upgrade at MLB, and I would rather see another versatile OLB instead of Orakpo to be honest with you.

Pittsburgh had the #2 rated defense in the league the year prior to Jim Haslett taking over. The following year, they dropped to #6, then to #12 in 1998, and finally to #11 his final year in 1999.

I was on your boat too about that.

I'm going to look at FA's and make a thread for guys we can target next year.

Re: Redskins vs. Bengals Post Game Reaction

GOOD

RG3- Mental Toughness and Poise continue to impress... continues to get up after taking some mean ass hits. No more Vick comparisions. He's skies and miles above Vick's durability

A. Morris- Ran the ball well for a 3rd straight game; no fumbles, had a nice bruising 12 yd run; should get at least 20 carries per game (only 17 today)

Special Teams- NO BLOCKED PUNTS!!, solid punt and kickoff coverage, Banks's 55yd return.

BAD

Secondary- Our secondary personnel is near unprofessional... Missed tackles, poor coverage, looking lost in coverage, I could go on. FS and SS need to be addressed in FA and/or the draft.

Zone Read Option- RG3 will not start a full season if this play is used more than 5-10 per game. The Bangals D began to key in on this play in the 2nd half; and we nearly had 3 fumbles.

Jordan Black- Allowing 3 sacks to Michael Johnson is disgraceful, and Black needed to be benched. I thought the interior OL (Monty, Litch, Chester) and for some stretches Polumbus played decent. 2 of those 6 sacks RG3 held onto the ball too long, but for Black to allow 3 sacks and not be benched is a shame.

Well the answer to your question in regards to who behind Black has gotten reps at LT is Tom Compton.

I think Maurice Hurt was active; he's played some T before, but if he wasn't then yeah, we would've had to play Black (which we did) the entire game. IMO Black just stood out (in the bad way) this game to make us think about cutting him this wk and let him retire.

Honest question here, is Jim Haslett fired at the end of the season if the defense stays this bad every week?

We know Mike and Kyle are here for one more year, but how bad would things have to get for both Shanahans to get fired? Less than 3 wins???
I am torn because i dont want rg3 to learn a new offense but shanny is losing my faith. 62 yard fg attempts and putting the game in the hands of his punt team and defense are making me scratch my head to the point that i have brain under my finger nails.

Re: Redskins vs. Bengals Post Game Reaction

Are you guys seriously blaming the Shanahans? We've put up more points the past three games than we did (probably) half the season last year. It's a lack of talent on defense right now. I got caught up thinking we would be elite, but a few injuries here, a few terrible refs there, and suddenly we look like shit.

I don't blame the Shanahans on this one. At least it's exciting to see a ton of scoring. It used to be it was run, run, pass and then giving up third down on defense. At least we eliminated the run, run, pass.

Re: Redskins vs. Bengals Post Game Reaction

I'm also ready for our defense to get a couple early stops so that Morris can break the hundred yard barrier. The man is good, but we're always playing from behind.

I hope they bring up Compton. If there are going to be any tackle struggles on the oline, I'd at least like it to be a rookie gaining some experience.

Just in case anyone is wondering Alfred Morris is on pace for 1,400 yards this year. Obviously theres ups and downs and players get tired as the season goes on especially rookies who are use to shorter college season but it's still worth noting.

Re: Redskins vs. Bengals Post Game Reaction

You know what cracks me up the most about our team.

The fact that we can never be good at both offense AND defense.

Its like its a requirement to be good at one and bad at the other.

We have no pass rush because we play 10yards off the receivers. There is nothing to disrupt the timing. A 0.5sec jam would make a huge difference with pressure.

The big catches are a result of a free release.
