Re: Draft Grade?

I did not follow the NFL Draft quite as closely this year. I felt that our needs were met by the addition of Al Saunders, and of course the FAs we signed.
Lloyd was also a worthy pick-up, and will make our receiving corps extremely versitile, attacking from all sides!

I printed two mock drafts, and just left them on my desk. Both had multiple rounds, and both had Rocky McIntosh to the Redskins at 53. It could be argued that we could have gotten him without moving up, but, there was this run on LBs, and the Redskins FO already had a plan in place in case there was just such a scenario. So, moving up 18 spots was a wash.

To my amazement, I also found our first reported FA Spencer Havner, ILB from UCLA there in the Fourth round of one of the Mocks!

Now, the two Mocks could have changed at the last minute, just before the draft, but I printed last Wednesday. Here are the links:

http://www.eastcoastsportsnews.com/2006Draft.html

http://walterfootball.com/draft2006.php

In addition, I quote CNYSKINFAN from HailRedskins.com:

"Whether we selected him at #53 or #35 our next pick would have been a 5th rounder.

Again here is the draft breakdown vs. NFLdraftblitz.com's value chart

Quote:
Pick #35 550 points
Pick #53 370 points

That is a difference of 180 points

If you value next year's second as a third at the same position you are picking this year that is pick #85 which equals 165 points

This year's 6th (189) is 16.8 points

We gave up a total of 551.8 draft value points for a pick worth 550 draft value points. That is about as even as you can get and we got a player at a need position for us that can start right away.

McIntosh was listed in the top 40 players by many scouts and with Thomas Howard going at #38, a player rated lower then McIntosh, Rocky would have been gone at #53, and probably Howard as well as there is a big drop off in talent at LBer after him.

This was a great pick at a position of great need and a great trade to get him."

Major Props to CNYSKINSFAN, who I've met, and whose opinions I respect.

So, bottom line, we got the guy targeted, at a decent price. And we got some other FB players from what I've read here. Needs were met with FA. Spots were filled with the NFL Draft.

For those who put stock in the "NFL Draft Experts", and those who provide you Post-Draft Grades, you have to balance that with the players HOF Coach Gibbs targets.

In addition, you must add J. Campbell, and B. Lloyd into the mix because of what we gave up to get each of them. So, both should be part of our Draft grade.

Re: Draft Grade?

I wouldn't be too concerned about the "experts". Let it all work itself out on the field. The coaching staff was happy with what they had prior to the draft and any additions were a plus. This team is young and is set up for a run!

Re: Draft Grade?

If we come out of this draft with a starter in McIntosh and some depth with a couple of the other picks, I'm happy. Let's face it, chances are a couple of these guys won't make the team. Maybe there's a hidden gem amongst the later round picks, maybe not.

Either way, I really like McIntosh and he seems like your typical GW linebacker.

It's no secret the Skins don't build through the draft, so naturally the "experts" are going to give the Skins a crappy draft grade, and it's probably deserved unless those later round picks pan out.

All draft grades at this point are so subjective anyway. You really can't fairly judge a draft until 2-3 years down the line.

Re: Draft Grade?

I think we had a solid draft. If we get one starter and two guys make the practice squad, then I will be happy. Maybe Havner will make the team also. Always remember Joe Jacoby the free agent Pro-Bowler.

Re: Draft Grade?

Will any of it even matter if the Lombardi trophy is sitting in Redskin Park next January?

Remember back when the Colts landed the two biggest prizes in the draft? Steve Emtman and Quentin Coryatt? (The number 1 and 2 overall picks)

That was the year Washington "blew it" by taking Bobby Wilson in the first round (a bust), Ricky Ervins in the second (a 3rd down back) and no one else anyone will remember except Keenan McCardell in the 12th (who we immediately got rid of). Even with such a crap draft, they went 14-2 and won the Super Bowl.

Who cares about the draft grades? Let Gibbs take the players he wants and "coach em up". I say we start a write-in campaign to force Kornheiser to get that Bandwagon out of mothballs.

Re: Draft Grade?

I'll give us a B-. I'm with the consensus that we paid too much for Rocky, BUT remember that we might not have had ANY LB that we wanted available if we would have waited longer, so I do agree with it.

Re: Draft Grade?

I am down with all our picks, but I gotta' say, is anyone else worried about the picks that the rest of the NFC East made? I think that each team got some GREAT players, especially the Eagles.

Eagles getting both Bunkley and Winston Justice was a downright steal, that's very scary. I wouldn't have blinked if Justice went to them at the 14th pick. But getting him at 39 is huge. That Jean-Gilles guy looks pretty good too, he's huge. Could solidify that interior blocking which would help them a ton. Running between the tackles is the team's biggest weakness, and if they can get that going they become an extremely dangerous offense. Bloom gives them a serious return threat too.

Giants getting S Moss in the 2nd round was a nice bargain. I hope Sean Taylor doesn't feel bad about decapitating Santana's little brother.

I wonder how Santana would react. They seem like close brothers and with that - blood might be thicker than water.

Re: Draft Grade?

That's how the offseason goes. We pillage and plunder in free agency and it looks like we gained on everyone in the division. But then the Eagles have their draft, and they always restock big time. And all of a sudden, they look pretty scary again.

It's a real tough division. I still like our chances, but I can see us going 3-3 in the division, 10-6 overall, making the playoffs, and then killing any non-NFC East team in the playoffs.

Re: Draft Grade?

Yeah, if those offensive linemen do ANYTHING close to how they're projected, they'll have a very dominant offensive line. At least we can hope that Griffin's experience will help him PWN a few of the rookies if they start.

Re: Draft Grade?

Also, just wanted to say that if you end up with a starter come out of the 5th, 6th, or 7th round, then you have to view that as a bonus. Your draft is not a failure if you don't end up with any starters from those rounds. Nobody can ever expect starters to come from those rounds. It's just icing on the cake.

Re: Draft Grade?

True, even though I'd hope that Santana understands that it's still the game you play and Sean isn't going to hit you any lighter just because you're related to a teammate.

Re: Draft Grade?

The more time goes by, the more I like McIntosh. The only thing, I would be worried about is keeping him healthy, which the redskins have a little control over.
