Re: Redskins have the worst defensive line in the league

I have to laugh when people try to defend our defensive line by what they did 2-3 years ago.

I'm through bitching about it though. Hopefully I'm wrong and Griffin, Wynn, Daniels and Salave'a have stumbled upon the Fountain of Youth sometime during the offseason.

That's the only thing we can hope for at this point.

This analysis is most likely correct, but very simplistic in its nature. I don't think I learned anything I didn't already know from reading this report.

Sometimes, it's just that simple.

It's hard to fault the analysis for not coming up with something new. An analysis should try to be true, not a scoop. Unfortunately, this one happens to be true and lays it out very well.

I think it's a good thing for the D line to get a dead last ranking because you know that they will hear about it and it's pretty embarassing to be called the worst so I figure they will be very well motivated to prove that this ranking is not at all justified. If they were ranked 30th it might be easier to brush off, but last is last and these guys could probably use some fire.

The secondary situation has greatly improved as has our linebacking, and that will reverberate in terms of what the defensive line will be able to do.

In passing situations, we have Marcus Washington (proven pass rusher) and Andre Carter (came on strong last year after switching from linebacker).

At tackle, Griffin has been excellent when healthy. He's healthy.

Anthony Montgomery has great talent and ability. Last year he was a rookie and it was a learning experience. I think he will show something big this year.

Kedric Golston has a lot of energy and ability and he is coming off a rookie season where he moved into a starting role. He will only be better this year.

Philip Daniels is healthy again and will only have to play in running situations.

Renaldo Wynn has always been a very competent and solid player, and is a good veteran to have as a backup in my view.

Joe Salavea has been hurt; we'll see how he does in a backup role now that he's healthy.

I have been hoping to hear some good news about Justin Hickman from UCLA, who we signed as a free agent. He is promising at least for the future.

Greg Williams has got to be pissed.

I still haven't heard anyone argue the fact that our secondary will significantly bolster our pass rush:

No one can argue that our pass rush sucked last year - but don't forget that our DB situation is much, much improved with serious depth: Springs, Smoot, Rogers, Maklin & Butler at CB and Taylor, Landry, Prioleau & Stoutmire at Safety. And don't forget the ever-versatile ADE at both!

Seriously, you can't tell me that the improved coverage won't lead to more time for our DE's to get to the Quarterback. IMO, if you want to improve pass rush, you can attack it from two persectives, better rushers or better coverage - the Skins went coverage.

The problem with this philosophy is that if your secondary gets banged up, then you've got NOTHING in terms of a pass rush. It's crucial to have D-linemen who can get pressure on the QB by themselves. We didn't have that in '06, Springs and Prioleau got nicked up and we set the NFL record for fewest sacks in a non-strike year.

I'd like to think the secondary is significantly better than last year. But Rogers still needs to progress, Smoot is a question mark thanks to his performance in Minnesota, and Springs is still on the fragile side of 30. Are Macklin and Butler far and away better than than the likes of Kenny Wright/Mike Rumph? I hope so, but do we know for sure?

These are the things that make me pessimistic about '07. The secondary is right behind the D-line as far as the biggest question marks of the upcoming season.

Damn, he right.Daniels and Wynn are like 80, and suck (seriously why havent we cut them now?) Griffin is always injured. Golston and Carter are the only promising players on tha d line.

Re: Redskins have the worst defensive line in the league

Well, I don't think the author gives a fair evaluation of Griffin, who while underachieving for a stretch with the Giants, has been pretty dominant with us when healthy. Second, I don't get the feeling he has really studied or understands the potential of Golston and Montgomery, who I think both have a chance to play solidly this season. We lack depth and we won't be dominant, but I think that we have enough talent to be more than adequate.

One final point. In 2004 people looked at the Skins defense and saw the Dline as our weakness, predicting we would give up tons of yards on the ground. In fact, we were ranked as one of the top rush defenses all season, and finished ranked third overall in total defense. The point I am making is not that this is 2004, but that 2004 proves that when you have a defense clicking as a unit it can make up for a lot of things, including a lack of big time names up front.

32. Washington Redskins
Six-year veteran Andre Carter is the most solid player on the defensive line. He has been surrounded by underachievers and aging athletes. Carter has excellent quickness off the edge but has never been a physical player versus the run. Phillip Daniels is on the backside of his career and does not have much playmaking ability. Backup ends Demetric Evans and Renaldo Wynn have shown little playmaking ability throughout their careers. Defensive tackles Cornelius Griffin underachieved in 2006 and has been an inconsistent performer much of his career. Rookie sixth-round pick Kedric Golston and backup Joe Salave'a play hard but don't have the tools to be impact players. The Redskins didn't address the defensive line deficiencies in the 2007 draft. Instead they tried to plug holes with veteran retreads.
Funny how we go from having the 3rd ranked D to this? Andre Carter was a joke until mid-year last year when he actually started to play - so he is our best player now? It was a bad year last year, but that means we suck now?? It's all so stupid, and this guy had to think of something to write about to fill his boring day. I hope our D makes ESPN eat their words…. I’m confident they will.

Re: Redskins have the worst defensive line in the league

i think the way people on this board look at C. Griffith, and the way the rest of the league looks at him, is totally different
