Getting those free Redskins drinking glasses at Shell or was it Sunoco (?) gas station if you pumped 8 gallons or more. I still have a lot of them.
7-11 had those plastic player collectors cups. Even though the skins were not very good then, it was easy to become a fan.
Sonny, Billy, a young Joe Thiesman returning punts, Larry Brown, Charlie Haraway, Roy Jefferson, Charlie Taylor, Jerry Smith, Chris Hanburger, Ron Mcdole, Diron Talbert, Coy Bacon, A young Dave Butz, Pat Fischer, MIke Bass, Ken Houston, Speedy Duncan...
It was rewarding as a fan to suffer through those early losing years to later have George Allen take us to SB 7 (loss) and then the Gibbs/Bethard dynasty.
I now relaize that for you fans that are too young to watch the Gibbs 92 SB win live, have suffered through 17 years of average to below average football. That is a long time.
Those were some good times! From an old bastard to another

I was young but I watched the super bowl, that's still one of the happiest days that I can ever recall

man how cool is it to see your team that you've supported go to the super bowl and win it convincingly? and how about detroit stomping dallas one week and we made them look inept in the nfc championship?

glad that I cared more about sports than cartoons as I could've easily missed that being only 8; I remember being so sad because I wasn't allowed to watch the MNF game where Monk got the receptions record.. I knewwww he was going to get it vs Denver and he sure did

It was #9, always Sonny, thow'in to Taylor and handing off to Brown! I grew up near Mt. Vernon, just outside of DC. Washington was crazy over the Skins, and I'm older than you!

It was either the Redskins or Broadway Musicals and I chose the Redskins. Do I ever regret my decision? Sometimes on opening nights, I ponder whistfully what might have been, but I've made my bed...

So I notice you were born in Florida but you currently reside in Norman, OK. Who were you cheering for when the Gators beat "Big Game" Bob Stoops and the Sooners in January?

O dude I had to root for Florida!!! I love the Gators man but it's funny my wife just graduated from OU and she is still mad at me lol! I hope Tebow and the gators can win 3 out of 4 next year!!!!

But I give mad props to OU because their Stadium And Fans are Amazing, and they have won 7 national titles so you can't hate on them too much.

Hell yeah. I don't hate on OK. I've got nothing but love for Stoops. He got the OU job because of his performance as D-Coordinator under Spurrier at Florida. Florida's D sucked, and he came in and we won our first title in his first year coaching the defense. I actually met him a few times during offseasons in Gainesville. Super nice guy. I'm friends with the son of one of the bigger boosters for the Gators, so I had the opportunity to have a few beers in the company of Stoops and Ron Zook. Both really cool guys. Zook can drink with the best of them btw.

LOL yea Stoops is the Shit! Real cool and down to earth guy! But Honestly I think Urban is a little bit ahead of Bob, but stoops recruits so good that OU will be damn good as long as he is here! BTW Adrian Peterson is the coolest player I have met so far, it was funny how he always drove around in BMW'S and Benzes lol.

I love this team but I really don't care for the owner or Vinny C. As Sfredskin fan said, they're like family. I can remember in 1977 when I was 7 years old and they started off 6-0 and ended up not making the playoffs. They were the hometown team and that's how it started for me. I've lived in the DC area my whole life so I follow this team closely.

Yea, i find myself bashing VC/DS on Warpath but yet i tend to want to take up for them to the "outside" world. Kind of like family. I can call my sis an idiot all i want but when someone else does i'll take up for her.

Re: Why you chose to be a Redskins fan:

Why I chose to be a Redskins fan is different than why I choose to be one now.

When I chose to become a Redskins fan they we're on the television all the time (still are), they were a good football team, and they were the hometown team (still are).

Why I choose to still be a fan is because of loyalty . . . . masochistic, painfull, gut-wrenching loyalty. I guess it would be like being married to a woman who put on a few pounds after she's had children. Sure there are plenty of other good looking women available but your wife is your wife, for better or worse.

I've made a commitment to this team for better or worse. There are a few things that could happen that would break that bond but not many.

My Dad worked in DC. Was a casual fan. I fell in love with Gary Clark- not afraid to go across the middle and mix it up for a little guy. Didn't hurt that the Skins were awesome back then. Boy its been awhile...

I never thought of it as a choice. After doing his part to defeat fascism, my grandfather settled in the DC area in the 1950's, adopted the Redskins as his team, gave birth to a Redskins crazy son who eventually gave birth to me. Where is the choice in that? To like another team would be basically like wearing a swastika while dancing on my grandfather's grave. I'm not gonna do that.

I hear you loud and clear. My family raised me on B&G but it was my Grandma who took me to my first football game, and if I were to ever root for another team she would hang me up by my balls. I swear you've never heard an 87 year old woman yell obscenities at the Cowboys like this but it's just great!! I honestly now think that it wasn't so much that she liked the Skins as much as it is that she just hates Dallas. They go hand in hand either way. Puts a smile on my face every time I think about it and I'd love for us to win one more Lombardi just for The Mimi. If not she'll be on the sidelines in heaven someday watching the Washington/Dallas game with her middle finger in the air screaming "you son of a bitch!" lol.
