I would say maybe the baddest player we had but not off the field was Brian Mitchell, maybe the badest redskin in term's of toughness and aggression, Sean taylor will top off that list when it's all said and done.

Back when I was in HS, my sister and I went to the OLD Redskin Park to get some autographs. It was after school and by luck, as we got there the players were coming out! We approached them as they came out and most were happy to oblige. Then came out Wilbur Marshall. He was the meanist looking dude I'd ever seen, never forget it. He had a big club-like cast on his hand from some injury. Anybody remember what year that was? (I think '88 or '89). Anyways, My sister got scared and said "I'm not approaching him". I thought to myself WTF? What's the worst that can happen? He'll kill me and I'll sue the Redskins and him. LOL So I went up to him and was directly in front of him and said, "Mr. Marshall can I have an autograph?" He looked right at me with a look of death (for what like seemed like a year), took my pen IN THE HAND WITH THE CAST and signed his name FACING ME on a clipboard I was holding. It was a perfect autograph. It wasn't a scribble, it clearly said "Wilbur Marshall". Remember, he had a complete cast on and he wrote his name upside down! Then he put the pen back down on my clipboard and kept walking, never said a word. Scared the shit out of me. My sis and I left shortly after that. I had to get home and put on a clean pair of shorts. LOL |

However, I've never been so let down when I met him, and maybe it was because I had him on such a high pedestal. But anyway, as I've mentioned here before I used to work for a tv station in the DC area. So anyway, when I first joined the station I was told that Darrell Green had an unwritten rule-all interviews with and profiles on him must include at least 30 seconds of talk about his charity, and anytime we interviewed another player about his charity work we had to also talk about Green's charity work. Technically it couldn't be enforced but, as everyone knows, the news biz can often be "rub my back, I'll rub yours", and the last thing anyone in the DC news biz wants to do is get on the Redskins bad side. This is one of the reasons he was resented in the locker room. So anyway, I wanted to do a story about Brian Mitchell's charity work on Thanksgiving. Everything was in place and then we got a call from the Redskins "This doesn't air unless you profile Darrell Green's charity work as well" It never aired. There were a lot of players who did charity work that no one ever knew about for that reason. Another time Darrell Green was in our studio and one of my co-workers came in to the studio with his 6-year old grandson and asked Green if he would sign his grandson's football. Darrell said "No, what's in it for me?" So I was there and said "the satisfaction of making a young kid happy" And he actually said "that's not good enough". And walked away. At least he was kind enough to give me an autograph when I had asked him for one 15 years earlier. But don't get me wrong, Darrell Green has done a lot of good for the community. It's just that he's not the only one, and sometimes it seems like that what he wants you to believe
