Santana Moss at $5+ Million Per Season?

I agree with giving him a pay raise, but until moss can prove that he will consistently put up #1 wr numbers, he sure as hell ain't worth 5mil per/year no matter how it breaks down. I'd say he's worth a bit more than the givens deal but not a whole lot more. so hopefull it's more like a 7year $26 million instead of a 7year $35 million type of contract. I think when healthy Moss has a world of talent, but this type of spending and planning/hoping players will restructure is what pisses me off the most about our front office the past few years either giving.

The key is the deal will average $5M per, if it's a 7 year deal the first few years will likely be very cap friendly at maybe $2-3 mill per, with alot of the money coming in the later years.

Your exactly right. He'll get a lot of upfront money, then a small base salary. Then in a few years he'll redo his deal for another signing bonus. No redskin will ever play out their contract.

He can't average just $2 million per year in the first few years if his signing bonus is $10 million per year. Signing bonuses can only be prorated against the cap for the first five years of the contract (in 2003 it was seven years and in 2004 it was six years). So, Moss should have a cap figure of about $3 million in his FIRST season and more and more each additional season.

Gibbs is not a GM. And in his radio address with the fat stinking Tony, he addressed your very question. He said that there were plenty of good teams around the nfl that excel without a proper gm. Tony said, the Patriots have a GM. Joe laughed, and said, do you honestly think in an organization with Belichick, that the GM makes any important decisions. He also said that he runs the club just like charlie and his previous gm's. He is comfortable with the organizational layout, and it will not change.

Somewhere there was a thread on here, or a hyperlink to an article discussing one obvious benefit of having a GM. It was during the Coles negotiations. The point was made that the Coles situation was mismanaged primarily because Joe and Danny were talking to Coles, and his agent. That a seasoned "Manager" would have been able to keep both sides civil. It could be argued that with a proper GM in that case, we could have saved $5 million.

I say that because, Gibb's wouldnt have slipped up in his first conversation with Coles, and told him that he would trade him. Not taking into consideration at that point the cap hit. (Of course that conversation is mostly reported by Coles, not verified)

Lets trade Gardner, Brunell, and handfull of pretzels for Casserly.

If you've read the other threads about this, I think we've determined that Gibbs' selection style isn't all bad. Yes, he fired a blank on the Brunell hire but he definitely more than made up for it in his signings last year AND this season. Also, after reading the Cerrato interview, if anything, I might re-evaluate my scouts.

I'm not going to start bashing them at all. I'm pleased with how things have been ran since Gibbs has gotten back. Again, with the exception of Brunell, we've made some very nice signings.

Everybody likes to focus on the negative, how about some of the positive acquisitions from last year under Gibbs?

Griffin, Springs, Portis, Cooley, Taylor, Washington just to name a few of the major ones.

It's definately true that Gibbs did a FANTASTIC job for the most part last season in the free agency/draft additions to the team. BUT, it's not last season's moves were questioning; it's this season's moves - letting Coles, Smoot, and Pierce go while supposedly signing Moss to huge contract.

I don't think we concentrate on the negative too much. Most Warpathers defends Gibbs on virtually every move he makes. IMHO it just seems that we concentrate on the negative because criticism of Gibbs garners so much attention (anger).

But a lot of people last year said things like "Griffin is an underachiever" "Springs is injury prone" "We should have drafted KW II over Taylor" and they turned out ok. So isn't it a bit early to pass judgment on this off-season's moves so soon?

I, for one, NEVER said the 2004 offseason moves were bad. I thought then and still think now Gibbs did a hell of a job in free agency and the draft. But, I do recall, as you pointed out, that a few people were concerned about Griffin and Springs.

As for passing judgment on this offseason's moves, it is a bit early. But, even you were sad to see Smoot go. Plus, I highly doubt it's too early to say we overpaid for Moss. Moss could turn out to be a great wideout (which I doubt), but the market right now (IMHO) doesn't warrant giving him a $10 million signing bonus. Plaxico got a $8 million signing bonus. In my mind, the market for Plaxico (even though it was sluggish) was much more intense than any market would have been more Moss.

We paid most of them what they deserved at the time. All young, great players. Moss shouldn't require more than 2-3M a year on average to lock up. He should consider that a blessing.
