Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?

I think AJ would be better than Allen, if for no other reason then taking the role of GM from Allen, because It'd help with accountability. I understand that many decisions are made organizationally, but how can anyone give their best to two jobs simultaneously, I don't think they can.

I like the talent the Chargers had from AJ's tenure, but I'm not completely advocating AJ either. The Redskins need to reform the decision making structure, because it's clearly not effective as is. If he's the guy, I'm onboard.

Smith let some good players walk out of San Diego. I'd prefer that they go get a young up and coming guy who's been in the trenches for several years. Get Newsome's right hand man. Baltimore has about a solid organization as there is. We need someone that comes from a winning organization.

How would we all grade Shack Harris, George Kokinis, and Phil Savage as General Managers?

Only one that rings a bell is Savage, he seems ok. After looking up the other 2, Harris is buddy buddy with Doug Williams so that is kinda wierd and Kokinis was a GM for like half a year with the Browns.

SS, if these guys are being talked about as possible GM, any insight to positives and negatives with these as executives in the front office? Any significant streaks of these guys grabbing positive streaks of talent?

I honestly dont think the Ravens have done great in the talent department as of late...I think Harris in Detroit has the most to brag about in the way of team building, but still could be better imo.

If newsome leaves the ravens and joins the skins I will have a ticket connection. My lady is friends with his daughter .... The other newsome in scout dept, not Ozzie.

Smoot - is it true aj smith doesn't like our 3 qbs?

Chico. None are being talked about. My point was just that all were Newsome disciples yet none turned their franchises around when they became GMs. All solid football people, but I don't know why we just assume DeCosta is the answer just because he's with the Ravens

I don't know how AJ Smith feels about the QBs anymore than what's been said publicly

I think having AJ as GM could be a great move on paper. AJ can pick talent, his issue was the money part of it. Bruce is a great organizer and can manage the cap. If they could work together they make the perfect GM. People's ability to work together is what makes them champions.

Yeah, I agree....Smith's son is a Redskins scout. Smith does indeed have the eye for talent and more talent is what this team needs.

Re: A.J. Smith to be Redskins GM?

I couldn't give a fig about A.J. Smith's title.

The question is, does he or Bruce have control? If the answer is Bruce, then changing titles changes nothing.

AJ Smith assembled some very talented teams without having Snyder's checkbook, which could alter which players he keeps. We could do worse at GM.

Yes....the owner has nothing to do with assembly of the team or coaching. Ownership has nothing to do with the play on the field either....the team has suffered because of Snyder's incompetent meddling with the firings of Norv and Marty but the team has made the playoffs four times since he's owned it....it's not like the Redskins have had a bunch of 2-14 seasons with Snyder as owner.....we could be a GM away from returning to the glory years...

True... If he ever hired a real GM and let him do his job... To date, he has not done this... I hope he does, but I am not holding my breath....

Snyder was hands off when Marty had control of the team and personnel....Snyder also didn't meddle when Joe Gibbs was drafting the players.....when Allen and Shanahan arrived he was hands off with them running things as well....I'm all in for A.J. Smith becoming the GM.....we need someone who can look at the entire team and spot where all of the weaknesses are and get the right personnel in that can turn those weaknesses into great strengths....Smith can do that...

snyder was NOT completely hands off when gibbs was here. he and vinny and gibbs sat around and talked about personnel moves, and later on al saunders and grilliams also got in on the act. he did give them deference though, but he was in on the conversation.

he was also very hands on with getting griffin, though i can't remember any other examples during shanahan.
