Report: Cousins breaks off contract talks with Redskins | CSN Mid-Atlantic

I'm guessing it is the Franchise tag for Cousins for the foreseeable future?

Gotta believe it. No way they let him hit FA, and it sounds like there's a long way to go to get a deal.

Franchise him and keep working on a long term deal.

This is clearly an effort on McCloughan and Allen's part to gain leverage. They will surely tag him, and when they do Kirk will have to decide whether he risks it and bets on himself to play his way into a huge deal next year, or whether he'd accept what the Skins are offering.

It's a tough call if you're Kirk. $20M for one season is good but you want that guarantee to really secure things.

Yes, it must be tough for Kirk to know that if he's franchise tagged and he gets hurt or has a disastrous 2016 season that he might have to get by on just !!! TWENTY MILLION DOLLARS !!! for the foreseeable future.

I remember a few years ago Brees didn't show up to any off season stuff. Can't remember if he was franchised but I wonder if KC does the same thing.

I don't think Cousins is the kind of guy who would refuse to practice / do off-season stuff. Can't believe he wouldn't want to stay here.

But he has told many people he wants to be / play where he is wanted, so maybe to him, the Skins aren't showing enough interest?

Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)

I also noticed that article "sort of" to me speculated that the fact that RG3 is still on the team could have something to do with the stalled negotiations. Perhaps Cousins is telling them that he doesn't want to negotiate unless he is the "unquestioned" starter? I don't really blame him on that part. Plus it just makes us look bad if we sign him to a multi year big money deal, and then during a slump next season he is benched for somebody....

RGIII has nothing to do with any of this.

It's a little crazy to think that the guy who just had the Redskins best qb season since '99 Brad Johnson would still believe a guy who can't execute a 5 step drop could be a threat against him.

The big issues I see with tagging him is that all his salary will count toward the cap. If he lights it up again the Skins will have to sign him and they will pay through the nose to do so.

I think KC could learn a good lesson from Ian Desmond of the Nationals who was offered an extension at a nice price and turned it down. Now he's hoping to be signed by somebody. So I'm saying that KC also needs to be prudent in his decision on what is and isn't a good/fair contract.

I think in some ways the Skins over spending on RG3 is making them reluctant to spend on KC but with that said I do think the Skins and KC will reach an agreement that works for both parties.

Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)

They have two weeks to complete the deal. This seems to be the normal process. I am not worried about them wrapping up a long term deal. My concern is over spending on him, if you offered RG3 16 million, KC should get 17 or 18.

Re: Better days ahead. (Off season part 1 thread)

I've heard that the NFL is a Passing League so long that I actually believed it.

But, in looking at the top tier NFC team stats, the common theme I see is they all ran the ball well and they all stopped the run well.

Rush Yds/game: Car #2, Sea #3, Arz #8 (Was #20)
Pass Yds/game: Car #24, Sea #20, Arz #2 (Was #11)

Stopping the Run: Sea #1, Car #4, Arz #6 (Was #26)
Stopping the Pass Sea #2, Car #11, Arz #8 (Was #25)

Seeing these stats really sobered me up with how far we have to go to be top tier.

OK, OK, I know we need more sacks right? If we had just 0.5 more sacks per game, then we'd be elite!
Car: 44, Sea: 37, Arz: 36
(Note: Was with 38, had more sacks than Sea & Arz).

OK, OK, it's more total take-aways (Int+Fumbl) that we need to be elite. Getting pressure causes more Int's & Fumbles....
Car: 39, Arz: 33, Sea: 22
(note: Was: 26 had more take-aways than the vaunted Seattle Defense)

So, what does it take to be elite (at least in the NFC)?

To me the stats tell are telling us to....
Get much better at Stopping the run and get better at Running the ball.

Hail!
