Re: NFL Live
I disagree. I seriously believe even if we had the same exact players as last year we would be a 9+ win team this year. why, you ask? well, first of all the offense will be in a much more comfortable position, as a matter of fact I think its gonna being almost unstopable Secondly, our defense couldnt possibly repeat last years performance......

Re: NFL Live
I agree with the last statement.
Also with the lower picks maybe we should think WR, because with these insane contracts that are gonna catch up with us, we are gonna have to cut Lloyd and Randle El eventually.

My point is that we really don't know what we will play like until the season starts or what (or who) we might stumble onto (Pierce).

Re: NFL Live
Dre Bly is a good player. He went to the Pro Bowl two years ago, didn't he? Also, he's had 6 interceptions for 3 seasons out of 8 -- and at least 3 in all but one (2). He's getting old, but maybe that's good reason for a modest contract.
I'd be happy to get him, for a reasonable price. NFL.com - Dre' Bly

But you're wrong about zone blocking; the Skins didn't employ any until midseason 06. There was an article in the Wash. Post about it & I remember discussing it here. Bugel was resistant to it but Saunders likes it. The beneficiary of zone blocking was Betts, he had some huge holes to hit. Wait till we see Portis hit those kind of holes!! Cross your fingers that we re sign Dock! |

Re: NFL Live
I'm not sure if I agree with siging two 30 year old FAs. I feel that this is going to lead to problems a few years from now. How many productive years do you think we'll get out of Bly and Fletcher? And, IMO, with each year their production is going to drop off.
It seems to me that once again we're diggin ourselves a hole. If we sign Bly we're going to have two old CBs in him and Springs. When they can't play anymore, we're going to be faced with the same problem of not having a good corner. In addition, Fletcher is also getting old, and Marcus Washington is going to be 30 soon as well. Once again, we're going to be facing the problem a few years down the road of having too many old players whose productio is dropping off, instead of a young guys who are coming into their prime. In addition, our defensive line is getting old. I think we should only sign one of these guys. Then we should try to sign some young guys who we can develop or fill these positions in the draft.

Re: NFL Live
I've gotta say that the move for Fletcher makes sense even though he's old because there's no one else on the FA market who plays MLB as well, we don't have the draft picks to draft a MLB, and we need a new MLB.
But I will be really pissed if we get another old defensive player. Absolutely everyone knows that our defense is aging fast and needs an infusion of youth. We have maybe five young defensive players in Rogers, Taylor, Golston, Carter, and McIntosh with any promise and not one of them has developed into a true stud. If our defense totally collapses in a year or so, the coaching staff will have no one to blame but themselves. |

Re: NFL Live
I agree that young players are generally better. However, we don't have draft picks. We won't be able to add young talent until next year (as long as we keep our picks).
That is why we must sign old(er) players now, if we are going to sign anybody this year. It's all about the contract. I couldn't care less if a guy is old, as long as we don't sign him to a long term deal. We must be reasonable. If we overpay for anyone, it should be somebody young with lots of promise. I wouldn't be opposed to signing Fletcher and Bly for no more than 3 year deals at a reasonable price for their age and skill level.

Unless we trade down for additional picks our draft is very limited this year so we'll have to address most of our needs in free agency. We just need to be smarter about who we go after. |

Re: NFL Live
If there's any truth to this, the team obviously is looking for a replacement for Springs, or at least planning in case they can't restructure his deal.

Re: NFL Live
I wouldn't say we're in cap hell. I would say, however, that other teams are in much better cap shape and our cap situation is limiting our ability to compete with quality free agents at positions of need (e.g., CB). So far, the only cap casualty of note has been Pierce who wasn't cut, but couldn't be resigned due to cap considerations. Springs, Daniels, Wynn and a few others might be cap casualties, but they're getting old anyways.
While we're not in cap hell, our cap situation is definately going to limit our options in the future. Most likely, we'll be forced to rely more on the draft over the next few years. Maybe that's a good thing. |

Re: NFL Live
I have been hearing rumors today about Bly going to Denver. This doesn't come from a article. This comes from Detroit radio stations.I live a hour away from Detroit and the word right now is Denver. That would kill our chances of getting him.We have nothing to trade and Denver has our 3rd round pick to trade.

Re: NFL Live
Michael Smith on NFL Live just got finished saying he's pretty sure Dre Bly is gonna end up a Redskin. Apparently we are gonna look to bring back Smoot at a big discount if the Vikings release him as well. I guess Springs doesn't want to restructure, and he's NEVER healthy, so I wouldn't care if we cut him. I think we could get Smoot and Bly for combined what we'd cough up for Nate Clements. I'd rather have the extra bodies than the overpriced star, especially if Springs leaves...
And apparently Nate Clements is looking for a contract with between $20-25 million guaranteed. We just can't go out and spend like that again. We need depth at too many positions to blow our wad on one guy. |
