Re: # 21 draft pick
Q Ball -- Want something logical? Go through the 1st round picks for the last X years, and tell me how many of the DEs have become real players? As you go through, you'll find very few have. DTs have done a bit better, but defensive line ends up being one of the highest bust positions in the draft.
The important thing about the draft, is there are some positions you absolutely don't need (For us RB, QB [high at least], TE, are positions we can ignore -- other than that go for the best available player. As far as defense winning championships, I'm not sold on that. It requires a balance. Also, it's not like the NYG defense was heads and shoulders above the Patriots. The top 7 D's were: Dallas, Steelers, TB, NYG, Pack, Skins, Pats. Defense is important to championships, no doubt. But lets look back a few years at the winners. NYG (nice balance, their offense put up a LOT of points this season), Colts (huge offense over a big defense bears team), Pittsburgh Steelers (great running team, but a defensive and balanced team), Pats (Offense big here, but balanced team again), Pats again (same deal), Bucs (defense over offense in this one, but the Center missing was huge imo), Pats (see above), Baltimore (Absolutely no offense), Rams (offense). As you can see, most teams especially lately have been balanced. But only two teams, Bucs and TB have pulled it out on defense alone.

Nice post. Don't know if history in draft is apples to apples for this year. I know there are some nice looking players like: 15 Derrick Harvey Jr. Florida Defensive End 6-4 255 5 Chris Long Sr. Virginia Defensive End 6-4 280 2 Glen Dorsey Sr. LSU Defensive Tackle 6-2 310 22 Vernon Gholston Jr. Ohio State Defensive End 6-4 265 LSU guy is tackle but may be too good to pass up but likely gone by then. Think if we can add a true play-making pass rusher that is good enough to start and a free agent cb or backer that brings more speed our defense could be even better and not give our offense pressure to win games. We have a good enough offense to win it all right now b/c our defense can be a top 5 unit in 08'. Lets make sure that happens and add to it. That's my point.

Re: # 21 draft pick
Would Howie Long's son still be around at #21? I doubt it but I wouldn't mind snagging him if he fell into our laps. I would say hold off on using the pick for a receiver. Who knows, maybe Brandon Lloyd will reappear within the west coast offense? Didn't he flourish under that system in the past?

Re: # 21 draft pick
Let me say this first off, I would be happy with a DE or even a DT. As far as your list though. Long is a) a 3-4 type guy and will be gone by the time we pick, Dorsey will also be long gone by our pick.
As I said before, there are a few positions we're set out and don't need more talent, BUT minus those few positions best available. We have some old guys in big positions such as OL, and DL.

Re: # 21 draft pick
Yeah - Who would want a 6' 7" defensive end with arms that can touch the roof of Texas stadium? I mean, what use is to a defensive end who may want to knock down passes ....
Oh wait.

Re: # 21 draft pick
What many people are forgetting is that our D was in the top 10 this year, and I trust Blache to do well for us in 08. The key to this years draft will be to trade our pick for more future first round picks or make it part of a blockbuster deal to land the "Big Target" reciever Jason Campbell needs which will help spread the field and should help Santana, Randel El, Cooley, and do I dare say the Legenary Lloyd? Hail Laron Landry! GO SKINS!

Re: # 21 draft pick
How big of a factor is this draft pick going to be based on the hiring of the HC? Or is this going to be stricktly Vinny and Snyder's pick together? Also, does anyone know who repalaced ST on the leadership council?

Re: # 21 draft pick
If by some big miracle our 1st pick doesn't go to cincy for CJ,then I definitely think we go DE.Hopefully Merling or L.Jackson will be there if not I think Cris Ellis.

Re: # 21 draft pick
I love Ellis cause I'm a Hokie, but I don't know if he's cut out for the 4-3. He's built much more like a speed rushing olb in a 3-4. Great athlete, he could probably play in coverage some too.
