LANDOVER, Md. -- Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis was unable to practice Monday because of a sprained knee, and coach Jim Zorn said Portis is "50-50" for Sunday night's game against the Dallas Cowboys.

NFC East blog

ESPN.com's Matt Mosley writes about all things NFC East in his division blog.
Blog network: NFL Nation

Portis bruised his knee on the final play of the first quarter of last week's 23-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers but returned for the next series and finished the game. The pain got progressively worse after treatment following the game, however, and Zorn said Monday that Portis has a bone bruise on the femur as well as a sprain.
Portis is second in the league in rushing with 995 yards on 200 carries.
"He's questionable," Zorn said. "I'd say there's a 50-50 chance. I'm hoping that he'll be even better than that. Another day of rest, and then we'll see how he comes in on Wednesday. ... We've got to get the pain out of the knee and see how he progresses along." Portis' absence from a major game against a division rival would be tough to overcome. He's been the engine of the offense, and his primary backup, Ladell Betts, has missed the last three games with a more severe knee injury. Shaun Alexander, signed after Betts got hurt, has contributed little, and the other running back on the roster, Rock Cartwright, is heavily involved with special teams.
well good,I'm glad it didnt happen on that play, but I still think it was bad coaching to have CP in there trying to score a meaningless td,at that point it should have been run run run with Alexander

I don't disagree with that a bit. Especially sense the game was for all practical purposes over at that point in the 4th. And CP was already nicked up, it was useless having him out there.

Good time for your #2 & #3 backs to be getting some work IF your running the ball?

If Alexander is our starter our def better come up big,I'd rather have Sellars start than Alexander
With you 100% htown, and I'm surprised others haven't said the same thing. Alexander is a dud and I don't think Rock can carry the game. I see a killer opportunity to mix things up w/ Sellers and Rock trading out. If the cowboys think tackling B Jacobs is a bitch what will they do against a bigger, stronger Sellers? Bottom line is this game is an absolute must win - sure Zorn doesn't want to risk injury to our star fullback to win a single game but 1) Sellers has proven very durable 2) a loss right now will put us out of the wild card spot and in the position of fighting our way back. Sellers should get some opportunities and if things seem to be working let him beat the shit out of the Dallas LB corp.

Clinton is not going to sit himself due to a knee. I think the coaches will have to take his helmet and cleats for him not to play. Even then they'll have to assign someone to grab him when he tries to run on the field with bare feet, and no helmet. No way CP doesn't start this game.

What are you all worried for? Don't we have a "Two Time Pro Bowler"? We'll be fine. unless you all are conceding we should have kept Mason......lol.

Unless I'm wrong about the "Two time Pro Bowler"(The infamous TTB) part then no I'm not drunk. When word came that the Skins picked up the TTB instead of bringing back Mason the lot of you said SA would be the perfect fit, that he would teach Portis something. lol. Now you all are saying with out Portis we are doomed. lol. Apparently your faith has wained a bit and the TTB is not the answer. lol. Atleast some of us were looking at a more current player who led the league in preseason. Oh ...thats right led the league in preseason against 2nd and 3rd stringers. lol.

Ya'll can't have it two ways...you can't say the TTB is going to revitalize his career here and then two weeks later say we are doomed if we don't have Portis or Betts.

Where are all the Rock fans who say Rock is a #1 and should be given a chance to run the ball? That he will fill in nicely for Portis and Betts. We have 3 RB on this team and and now a 4th and only Portis is the man? Maybe we should pick up another RB you know ....just in case something happens to Rock.

My mistake, for some reason I thought you were talking about D. Hall (shoot, maybe I'm drunk). Well Shaun Alexander was brought to spell Portis until Betts got back. I don't think anyone was saying that he was a savior or something like that; nor no one expected Portis to get hurt. He's (Portis) arguably our best player and we can't win when he is shut down or out with an injury (if we can, I'll happily eat my words).

SA was told that he would come to help while Betts was out, and that he might not be with the team at the end of the season. I think some of us were wishfully thinking that SA would see this as a shot to get back in the league and play well...but play well as a back up, not as the starter. Even if Betts was back 100% healthy, you have to be concerned with the Portis injury. Right now, if Portis can't play, we just need a RB that can hold on to the ball and manage the running game.

Couldn't agree with you more. I gave out this scenario a long time ago and recently on the SA thread. What would happen if Betts and God forbid Portis got hurt. But I am not saying anything. We just better hope Rock and TTB have a good game. I dont see it. But hopefully it happens. If not its going to be a long game. But I hope we can pull it out. But TTB and Rock are not the answer and now when disaster strikes people finally realize why we should have kept Mason as the 3rd back. My bad. He only lead the league in rushing in the preseason. Oh and it was against 2nd and 3rd stringers..My bad..Sorry. This guy named Hightower for the Cardinals looked good in preseason too. What happened to him? Preseason is worthless huh. Any bum can lead in rushing in preseason!!..On that note. I hope CP plays. GO SKINS!!

If CP doesn't play, it will big a BIG drop off BUT even if it's just Rock and Alexander we will be okay. They are as good or better than any number of RB tandems out there.

Portis needs to play to reclaim that leading rusher title! Huge blow if he can't go, but we should still be able to pull out a victory without him.

Maybe, but if Santana can't go, the double whammy on the offensive side of the ball will potentially kill us. We looked good in Detroit(I was there), but couldn't punch it in. At home vs Pittsburgh we just got our ass kicked without Santana in their as another threat. I hope Hall is ready to replace Springs or we have the potential to get torched. With Romo coming back probably, the Boys will be jacked up for what amounts to a must win for them.

This news SUCKS...I hope it is BS!
As someone else stated, its pretty simple...If Portis doesn't play, we lose.

Portis better tough it out this week at least, and Betts better get his butt fixed fast cause Alexander and Rock aint gunna get more than 50.
I hope Im wrong, but without Portis, all they have to do is double Santana.

Remember a couple years back when beating Dallas was a Cooley show?
I hope Buges mentions this to Zorn cause hes our only healthy offensive threat right now.
