Maybe it was wrong from the start to inherit the Braves than change it to Redskins, (what the redskins have to do with DC is beyond me) but its fiction.
I always loved The Senators but thankfully we didnt switch to the Nationals- (that name is pretty 'tarded)
The pittance they'd spend in new signage (marketing is always changing so I dont see that as an increased cost) would be more than offset with the sales of new hats, shirts, mugs, etc.

As a historical note, even when Washington's baseball team was called the Senators their officical name was Nationals and had been since the 1860s. Charley Brotman took to calling them the Senators because he couldnt come up with a good logo for Nationals and then everyone started calling them the Senators. Nationals wasnt some name they pulled out of thin air.

They wouldn't make a dime of that new merchandise money from me. In my mind if they change the name the team I grew up loving would be dead. I am not from the Washington DC area so i would have no natural reason to cheer for a team from Washington DC that was not the Redskins. The Redskins are my team.

Re: Name change

I honestly cant see it happening unless the Redskins become a consistently winning team. I mean if there was ever a reason for a fan to defect it would be because the name was changed. There will be a lot of PR stuff out of Redskins park saying that’s its still the same organization with the same legends and traditions, but at the end of the day I think a lot of people will view it as its no longer the same team. It will give people a easy reason to switch teams if they are tired of mediocre play. And some people may also say I don’t want to route for a team that switched names; ie my team is the Redskins and they no longer exist.

Now if the Redskins are playing great and have been for some time the organization could probably get away with changing names and not losing a lot of fans. But that makes for a little bit of a catch 22. 90% of Native Americans embrace the name Redskins; it more plays into the warrior heritage to them and puts them in a favorable light. Im sure Native Americans would be more okay with it as long as the team is considered a joke and continues with years of poor – mediocre play. But do it while theyre winning it kind of disrespects Native Americans.

But its still the same team, just a different name. It amazes me that anyone cares what they are called. I am a fan of the team no matter what silly nickname they use.

Also thinking about what i just said. If the team were to move to LA (or another city) would you still be a Redskins fan? Its the same team just a different location.

It works both ways honestly

Yes but I do think changing cities is a lot different than changing nicknames. I think the answer would depend on if one lives in DC or not. I suspect the DC person would dump them while someone in TN doesnt care quite as much where they are playing as long as the uniform and name are the same.

Its not a nickname its the actual name. Its different then a high school or college mascot. The team is firmly grounded in the name / is the name.

Re: Name change

I would still route for the team, and mainly just chalk it up to another reason why I hate danny snyder (even if it wasn’t his fault). But my relationship to the team would change. Maybe I would like them more. Probably I would like them less. It would no longer be the same team. This would be a major change. Maybe for the better. Probably for the worse. There would undoubtedly be some disconnect, for me at least.

Re: Name change

The team name is pretty important, it's a big part of the entire package of a team.

The name, colors, uniforms, those are the only things that really stay the same. Players and coaches come and go, and even ownership to a lesser degree.

So if you're a fan of the team, aren't you also a fan of the name to a certain degree?

thats pretty cool I didnt know that, i guess i kinda see where he was going with it.

I dont want the name changed but in time who knows what will happen. Im guessin 10 years before they changed "old glory" to "old DC", people thought it was just PC crap and it would never be changed either.

Sorry if you read my previous comment Matty, I misread what you wrote. Please accept my apology. If you didn't read it, good.

On the subject, I'd be fine with a change only if it were changed slightly to the 'Skins. Everyone would still know what it means, but it would be a good gesture and a compromise that probably should be done.

Re: Name change

Well the song mutilation was cheaper. A franchise-wide rebranding will cost millions, perhaps over a billion...and for what valid reason? None.
