Re: Redskins Reconstruction: Quarterbacks
Repent the end is nigh. Only those who believe in Alexander the Great 1b will be forgiven once he's on board. All the Andy Daltons, Jay Cutlers, and John Elways in the world can't compare to a Shanahan coached Alex Smith!
In all seriousness though I like him just because he gives us a veteran option with upside. I think right now the best thing we can do is hope that a guy like Smith or Bulger hits the market to compete with Rex and we draft a rookie QB that hopefully defies the odds and breaks the trend of 2nd round QB bust.

Re: Redskins Reconstruction: Quarterbacks
Alex Smith ? REALLY ... How is Alex Smith a better option than Rexy ... what the hell is going on here ... Why not just go get Jamarcus Russell back in the fold ? Keep The Rex Cannon, draft a QB in first 3 rounds and let's get this party started

I am more open to Bulger than smith. That way we know the future is in the rookie that will be drafted.

Spend 40 years writing about and reporting on the team?

Re: Redskins Reconstruction: Quarterbacks
Competition is good if we can get competition for free(meaning not giving up draft picks) then why not.

How is Smith better than Grossman folks? Seriously

Re: Redskins Reconstruction: Quarterbacks
Well, he's younger for one thing. He has talent, and he's shown he can be a very good QB. But a) he needs to prove he can stay healthy and, more importantly b) he needs to be in a system that isn't changing offensive coordinators and systems every year.
I'm not really sure he's the best fit here, or better said that we're the first fit for him. But I'll repeat what I said a few months ago when I first brought him up, he is in many ways just the type of QB Shanahan would like, a young veteran who has shown promise but who he (Mike Shanahan) believes he could take to the next level. A la Jake Plummer. Now the rumor a couple of months back was that the Redskins were working on a 2 year extension with Rex Grossman to make him the transitional QB to the next guy (who they would likely draft this year). So I don't know where that is right now, but suppose they don't come to some deal with Grossman and suppose they do end up trading McNabb. Just suppose. Why not sign a guy like Alex Smith under some incentive laden contract. Give him a year to prove himself to the rest of the league, and us. And meanwhile draft a QB, such as Locker or Ponder or whoever, and give them a year to get acclimated and then give them the reins in 2012. Or if Smith proves to be the guy, then you've got a young QB to back him up for the future. Again, I think we need to acquire not just one but two QBs over the next couple of years.

Re: Redskins Reconstruction: Quarterbacks
Given the choice I would definitely take Grossman. 3 years under his belt now in this system, he would be the better choice in the short run as a potential starter.

Re: Redskins Reconstruction: Quarterbacks
Ideally I would say Smith, but nothing is "ideal" about our qb situation, so I agree w/you that the 3 years Rex has in it would make him a better short-term answer. Bringing in yet another vet qb might be subtraction by addition; having a rookie learn w/a clipboard can't be as effective when the vet starter is new as well. Not to mention, it would change the chemistry of the team once again.

Re: Redskins Reconstruction: Quarterbacks
I am not sold on Smith and this response was my first response. However, perhaps Smith has greater upside than the Rexster.
We know what we are getting with Rex - good one week, a train wreck the next. Multiple turnovers. And Rex has hit his ceiling - he is not going to get any better. Smith, on the other hand, could be one of those players who blooms with a change of scenery. He could get much better and really contribute.

^ 8-8 is right. I don't see us going anywhere meaningful with Rex. Ever.

WE won't go anywhere with any QB unless he's a rookie in this draft imo. Alex Smith has had 3 different OC's and he still sucks. Might as well have JC back
