Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
It's the right call for Gibbs to let him go, if he doesn't want to be here that bad he's the last kind of guy you want infecting your locker room.

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
With all due respect to Laveranues Coles, this is great news to me. Coles was miserable and that has a very destructive effect on the atmosphere of the team. Give him credit for not going public – but the players all knew, the coaches – everyone.
We need “all for one and one for all” players on our team. That is what makes for a great team. In addition, Coles may never get back to his pre injury form and if not, ability wise he is just getting too high a paycheck. We have an excellent player in Taylor Jacobs who just needs room to blossom, and we may well have Mike Williams on our roster soon. Gibbs made a typical super classy move in agreeing to release him outright. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. That is good also in that in generates the respect of players, and potential free agents. Speaking of free agents, I hope we get a player like Andre Davis. I hope we pass on those big names – unless the staff really comes to believe they would add a tremendous amount to the ballclub. A potential lineup could include: Taylor Jacobs Mike Williams Andre Davis James Thrash We probably need another free agent, but that is a good group right there in my view. As far as being unhappy with the offense – those are just comments to be ignored. We are building something special here, and our offense is going to be super. Coles just doesn’t fit in with the kind of team we are building. I wish him well and hope he finds a team that is going to highlight him, and I hope he recovers from his injury soon. We will have an excellent receiving corps without him. |

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
I hope you all are right about Jacobs because I haven't really seen it. I'm not sure to what you're all referring. He looked alright, but I don't think Jacobs should be the #1 receiver next year. That just doesn't sound like a good plan to me. Even if we get Williams or the kid outta South Carolina, I don't like the receiving corps next season. This sucks!

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
Coles' attitude was very destructive. He had to go. He is not the same player who came here originally, and there is no guarantee he will ever be that player.
Look at the NE Patriots - they have talented players who play together as a team very well and very unselfishly. One receiver even played on defense for much of the year. That is the winning model in my view. If Gibbs thought it was hurting the team by releasing him, he wouldn't have done it. He's doing it in a classy way, but the fact that he is considering it at all to me says that he knows our team will be better off without Coles. No disrepect to Coles - for him to be on this team is out of the question. He is dragging everyone down. He HAS to go, or change his attitude. |

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
I think everyone has forgotten about Antonio Brown. That guy has some real speed. I would hope with the departure of Gardner and Coles we could give this guy a serious chance at WR and not just KR. Best of all he's not making hardly any money. This is how Gibbs works, he finds solid players that other teams have given up on and gets the most out of them. I wouldn't be surprised if Gibbs hasn't had this planned for a while, either Coles gets the surgery or he's gone. I know Brunell didn't work out so good last season but I would like to see what he does next season with some actual talent at wide out. Not to say that Coles doesn't have talent but as stated earlier he hasn't been the same since the injury and if he wont get surgery to fix it, whats the point of him staying here anyway? I just hope he gives back enough so that we can go out and get a couple of cheap receivers like Brown under the radar that can contribute.

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
His cap number for 2005 is $3,357,142. If he is released straightup the cap hit is $9,285,710. So he has to give back at least $5,928,570 to break us even on the deal. We better be doing better than that. I don't understand why we don't just trade him? It makes no sense whatsoever to release him. If you make a handshake deal that has him give back ALL of his remaining SB and then only trade him to a team he approves of and on the condition that he can restructure with them to get some guranteed money then it works out for all. I mean we probably wouldn't get much of a deal in a trade but it is better than nothing. I am thinking like a 5th round pick. I mean at this point a 5th round pick and cap space would be better than a middle finger as he walks out the door.

Re: Redskins Expected to Release Coles
WTF?!
I don't like the fact that he's going to be gone, but you all are being a little hypocritical. I'm sorry to say, but if Coles doesn't like the system, I think he should be able to leave. A franchise can cut a guy if he doesn't fit its system, why shouldn't a player be able to leave if he doesn't like the system. To be clear, I am speaking in general, I, in no way, want to see Laveraneus Coles leave the Skins. I love the guy. However, how can everybody get on a soapbox about loyalty from the players when organizations treat it like its a 4 letter word. No organization is loyal to its players anymore, especially not this one. I am a Redskins fan, but I have to say, this team may be reaping what it has sewn for the last few years. I love Coles, I love the Skins. This is a sad day. I'm shocked. What's unfortunate about all this is the fact that Gibbs is caught in the middle of it. If Spurrier were the coach, I probably wouldn't mind that much, however, if Spurrier were the coach Coles would probably wanna stay. Now what do we do with Gardner? Is he still gone? The passing game is in bad shape. |
