Room for Bowen?

But then again, if you release Gardner and Barrow, then you've got enough cap room to sign the rookies anyway. And at that point, you don't really need any more cap room in 2005. So under that scenario, it would probably just come down to training camp competition. Should be interesting to watch.

so we have to cut him in camp, if we don't we would have to pay 1.4 and 2.4 milllion in penalties in the next two years. If we cut him in camp we only pay .8 million this year and 400,000 next year in cap penalties?

not bad, money could be the deciding factor, we need the money and 2 million next year is a huge plus

the problem is that we really don't know bowen in GWs scheme, he didn't really play last year, the one game he was amazing 2 sacks and a forced fumble. if hee played half as well for the rest of the year he would be challanging ed reed. We can't know or expect him to continue at that pace but it is a BIG decision expecially if bowen really can put those numbers up only one out of 4 games with GW.

IN GIBBS AND WILLIAMS WE TRUST, they obviously know more about the players than we do and they will make the right decision.

Beyond Springs, Harris, and Rogers at CB, I wonder about the other guys. Jimoh is so-so in coverage but the dude isn't bad on special teams. Wilds and R. Brown are both interesting prospects with plenty of potential; Wilds in particular is impressive. And what about bringing in Hawkins and Joyce? Those guys could very likely challenge for the 4th corner job. Here's my personal picks for it:

Springs (no explanation needed)
Harris (he'll begin as the starter but by late season will be the nickelback)
Rogers (will replace Harris as the starter near season's end)
Wilds (this dude will only get better)
Jimoh (character guy and ST man)
Brown (will beat out Hawkins and Joyce; price tag will be cheaper)

If he's on the team this year, he counts 1.4 million against the cap. If he is cut this year, he counts 0.4 million this year, and 0.4 million next year.

But if you're already planning on getting rid of Barrow and Gardner, you don't really need anymore cap space than that. I think they'll keep Bowen around given the Lott rehab and the ST situation.

I think Lott getting cut will really burn. I hated to see Iffy go myself, I thought he was young and still growing. Bowen is such a liability in the passing game I think he has a real chance. Everyone says Williams loves converted CBs which is what Lott is. I think Lott/Clark at the SS position give us a much more versatile team. They don't hit like Bowen, but they'll give up less big plays.

Seriously though -- if we EVER lost Ade I think this board would go into a tailspin. We wouldn't have anyone to talk about.

theres been a lot of posts, sorry for not quoting, but:
*even if ST does get convicted (which looks very unlikely now) he'd still be able to avoid STARTING the trail till the end of the season in all probability.
*bowen mot definately is a total liability in coverage, thats why the packers gave him up, he plays the run pretty well though and he' not afraid of hitting people... someone mentioned dixon had 3 sacks last year, well bowen had 2 in ONE game.
*I think bowen makes the team for the same reason clemons is around, he's a great sack threat. Williams would probably keep even as a non starter for situational rotation... beside that, having a former starter as a backup is never a bad thing (which will happen if either clark OR bowen win the job).

as far as the money thing, cutting bowen would definately save ome cash, but with gardner and barrow looking like they'll be released for sure, i don't think we'll really need the money for this season.

True. You reminded me that G. Wills likes to use decoys in his system and putting Bowen in to line up like he's going to rush and then drop into coverage would be a good one.

I think we're seeing a little revisionist history with the Bowen signing. Green Bay offered their backup strong safety a tender offer as a restricted free agent. He was firmly entrenched behind Marques Anderson and Darren Sharper (remember that name - he will probably go to the Hall of Fame). The Redskins offer was for four years, $6 million, with a $1.6 million bonus. The reason the bonus was that high is that the Packers wanted Bowen - they just didn't want to pay that much.

The knock on Bowen is that he's horrible in coverage. Bowen made probably three bad plays in his first year with the Skins - taking horrible angles to plays which allowed our opponents to torch him and the team. He also made several very good plays that year. One of the reasons he was acquired was the last game he played with the Packers, and was asked to shadow a certain Mike Vick. He ended up that game with 15 tackles (10 solo), leading his team in the category.

Since he played in all of five games last year, perhaps we ought not hold his 2004 stats against him, especially since they compare favorably to (dum-dum-DUM) Sean Taylor when projected out over a full season in some categories.

I like Bowen and if I remember right he was playing out of position two years ago anyway right?

And I know that everyone always says you can't lose your job to an injury, but it happens all the time. And I just have this feeling that the starting job is now Clark's to lose (this is just a feeling, that's all).

So if Bowen can't wrestle that starting job back from Clark, I think he might just be too expensive a backup. We'll find out soon enough

i know bowen had to cover a no name undrafted WR in a giants game last year and he was only about 500 miles away when that f***er caught a TD pass from a hasbeen QB, so until he proves he can cover i'm going to assume he can't
