Re: Vick Sentenced to 23 months in Prison

I don't think the sentence is overly harsh at all and I'm glad Vick's celebrity status wasn't a factor in his sentencing. I am glad to see him locked up.

But it's only human I think to recoil at the site of seeing someone crash and burn so fast. I can't help but pity him, even if I think he deserves everything he's getting.

I think the ultimate tragedy - at least in the original Greek sense of the word - is that Vick will end up back in VA as just another lowlife, his neighborhood having won in the end.

Re: Vick Sentenced to 23 months in Prison

as an attorney and former criminal clerk i have seen far worse crimes get lesser punishments. (but that is on the state level, the fed level does not play around and has mandatory minimums and sentencing guidelines).

my pop is a former federal prosecutor who knows this judge and his reputation and said this judge is harsh and hands down stiff penalties. just like in the real world, it all depends on the judge you get and what day you get him or her. ive seen my judge give slaps on the wrist one day and the next day give a guy 2 plus years in jail for basically the same crime and priors,

go skins!

Re: Vick Sentenced to 23 months in Prison

Did you guys hear that the Falcons owner wouldn't rule out Vick coming back to play for ATL?

I think he's just saying the right thing at this point. After 3 years away from the game who knows what kind of QB he'll be. You would have to think it would take him some time to shake off the rust and by then we're talking about a 31 year old QB who's best asset is his legs. Some rumors say he would be better off coming back at an easier position to adjust to such as RB or WR.

My guess is the NFL won't suspend him when he gets out of jail. I think 3 seasons away from the game is appropriate enough of a punishment.

I don't know if he was just saying the right things or not. Common sense says you would think so, but remember Blank wheeling vick around in a wheel chair? I've read that they were pretty close, for an owner and a player anyway.

Yeah they were close but Blank must have felt so betrayed initially. He thought he knew Vick but he obviously didn't. He does seem like a good guy though and perhaps he'll give Vick a 2nd shot.

That's kind of what I'm thinking. After his cool down period, he might've started to feel bad for Vick. I could see it happening.

Matty, I heard on some show, that this might have something to do with the signing bonus the Falcons are trying to recoup. Something about they cant cut him because then they can't get the signing bonus. And if they say he's not coming back, could hurt them in arbitration.

Re: Vick Sentenced to 23 months in Prison

Im also curious how much the "celebrity factor" actually plays into this. Our legal system does not cater to justice, it caters to money. If you have money, you don't get the type of penalties that a poor person would get for the same crimes. High powered lawyers can spend much more time and effort, along with often just being plain better than say a court appointed lawyer. The only way this doesn't happen is if the prosecution has a slam dunk case -- even then, money can work our plea deals.

In unrelated news to Vick's prison term, but certainly not thread worthy. Vick files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. 10-50 mil in the hole.

WAVY TV 10 : Virginia and North Carolina News -Vick files for bankruptcy protection
