We need a guy who can't be stopped....like Manley...like Mann....like Butz
Maybe under the new regime, RK, or Smith....or PotRoast

I wish we could sticky this for the next time someone gets their panties in a bunch over the 3-4 vs the 4-3...

On running the 3-4: "I was a 4-3 guy for years and then the last four years in San Diego, being involved in the 3-4. That’s the thing people don’t realize: You’re in a base 3-4 about 15-18 snaps a game because the NFL has gotten to the point where it’s a sub league, meaning they’re in nickel personnel groups about 75 to 80 percent of the time. When you’re talking about a base 3-4 team or a base 4-3 team, that’s 20 percent of the game. The other 80 percent you’re in nickel, you’re in dime. So, no, I really don’t get hung up and caught up in base 4-3 or base 3-4. I learned it. I really enjoyed it the last four years and it’s a perfect fit here because we are built from a base defense to be a 3-4.”
At this point who cares? Just stop someone on 3rd down and stop giving up so many big plays.

Re: New Look Defense

Actually, I am aiming a bit higher, but stop someone on third would be a pleasant start.....
People get very hung up on the 3/4.....4/3 thing. He does a good job dispelling it.

Washington Redskins OTA observations, Part 2: Surprises with starters - Washington Redskins Blog - ESPN

Another surprise: Trevardo Williams worked with the starting unit in place of Ryan Kerrigan (out after arthroscopic knee surgery last week). Rookie Preston Smith worked with the second string. I like that he wasn’t automatically added. Also, Smith and Trent Murphy worked on the right side while Williams worked mostly on the left (there are times when they switch sides based on the offensive formation).

Third-year corner David Amerson worked with the second-team defense Tuesday. When DeAngelo Hall is healthy, I’d imagine he’ll return to the starting lineup (assuming he hasn’t lost anything because of the Achilles’ injury). Hall said in the first four weeks of the offseason, he worked with the starters whenever they were on the field. Bashaud Breeland is the No. 3 corner, it appears -- his ability to cover in the slot helps.
I think he meant Amerson worked with the first-team defense.

Re: New Look Defense

Thing I'm worried about for our defense: LB's in pass coverage

Besides Keenan Robinson, all of our remaining LB's are below average in pass coverage.

Trent Murphy in coverage = no thanks
Preston Smith = haven't seen him yet, but seems to be a little too big to be any more than average in coverage
Perry Riley = we all watched last season
Ryan Kerrigan = decent in coverage, definitely not his strong point
Martrell Spaight = Everything I've read about him says he is a work in progress in pass coverage, and that was at the college level.
Jackson Jeffcoat = don't really know much about him, but seem more like a rushing specialist.

Don't really see us playing a lot of Base 3-4 that doesn't involve the OLB's not rushing the passer. I would imagine the base 3-4 will involve a lot of 5 man pass rushes, with both OLB's getting after the QB. Which leaves 1 less in coverage, but more pressure on QB.

I think we will see a good balance of 4-3, 3-4, and nickel packages.

I think our LB's will not be tasked with as much pass coverage as they did in the past Hassslett defense. With the additions in Free Agency at safety and corner our secondary's level of play and depth is improved. We in turn will be able to play more Nickel and Dime and not suffer a loss in level of play like we did in the past when we had no talent and depth in the secondary.
Our defensive line scheme change to a more attacking style combined with a greatly improved DL personnel will generate more pass rush.
LB's being hung out to dry for a long time in coverage will hopefully be a thing of the Hasslett past.

In the past Haslett didn't use a lot of sub packages in response to certain offense personnel groupings. This often left our LBs matched up against TE/RBs. League wide the LB vs TE/RB match-up is not favorable there are a few teams with great coverage LBs but that is the expection.

Barry and Fewell both use more sub-packages with special personnel. Under Blache we did something similar with the 'cobra' package that put 3 LBs on the field and removed a LB. Under Barry I could think we will see more sub-packages in the secondary. It could be Dashon, Duke and Jeron.

This is why I'm not a fan of the 3-4. Yeah I know we're not in it all the time. But it requires your OLB's, your best pass rushers to be in space. It asks them to cover guys like McCoy or Witten.

Kerrigan should have his hand in the dirt all the time, as should Preston Smith at 270lbs. Murphy has 0 skills in coverage. I don 't think I ever saw Manley and Mann trying to cover cause it made no sense. Best rushers = hand in the dirt and get after the qb. Leave the coverage smaller athletic LB's like Monte Coleman.

^^From PFF

I think Paea or Hatcher moves to LE don't see the point in starting an inferior player in Ricky Jean.

I would put Duke at SS to start the season and let Jeron works as back-up FS just in case Dashon is really done.

I'm really rooting for Amerson to bounce back, if he plays up to his physical gifts together with Cully they can be a huge boost for the D.

Some problems with this. I definitely disagree with the shading of Keenan Robinson as orange for below average but I guess this is dependent on PFF's stat-driven stuff. Which I think is bunk.

I agree with you on Ricky Jean and in fact I don't think this at all reflects the team's intended starting defensive line. It will definitely be Hatcher, Knighton, Paea starting.

There is zero chance that Francois starts over Hatcher.

Re: New Look Defense

I also don't agree with Breeland as orange. I'd put him yellow with upside.

And Goldson rating as red/poor based on his Bucs play last year is totally fair, but also completely irrelevant. This will be a totally different scheme and he'll be utilized totally differently.
