This play is designed for the offensive team to feign rushing one way, then attacking the defense in the opposite direction. In a counter trey right, the center, right guard, and right tackle block left as if the play is going left. The left guard and left tackle "pull" from their positions by moving behind the other linemen and around the right corner.

The running back takes an initial feint step to the left, then cuts back to the right, receives the handoff from the quarterback, and follows behind the pulling left guard and left tackle. The left guard and left tackle will usually be blocking smaller linebackers and defensive backs downfield--this mismatch favors the offense. The counter trey requires quick, athletic linemen for good execution.

Many teams have run this play, but it first became well-known when run by the Washington Redskins in the 1980s.

I don't recall seeing that this year, looked like a new wrinkle to the running game.

With the counter trey the ball is handed off, pitch is a pitch, linemen are alway's pulling on a pitch, or sweep play. counter has a misdirection to it.

Right, but I thought I saw some misdirection in there as well. Or I could have just been high from being so damn happy the entire game. :cheeky-sm

I totally agree about running the "Portis" type of plays and it going very well. However, I am concerned going forward because Thomas pulled on most of those tosses / outside runs and I am not sure if we can expect the same from Ray Brown. Don't get me wrong, Brown is as solid of a veteran as I would ever want to have backing up my line, but I am not sure he can perform (anymore) at the same sort of athletic level as Thomas.

Gibbs loves Brown, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Molinaro in there giving him some rest, the word was he was knocking D-linemen 5 yards back off the line in practices in the pre-season, I remember hearing the guy is very powerful, at least we have some hopefully pretty good backups, I to would be concerned with Brown if he has to get out and run.

yup. 42 year old linemen pulling like Thomas? unlikely. best solution is to use Sellers as lead blocker in those situations. he'd be good for the inside plays as well.

From Redskins.com...

"Portis now has 1,296 rushing yards and is closing in on Stephen Davis's team record of 1,432 single-season rushing yards set in 2001. Portis needs just 137 yards in the Redskins' final two regular-season games."

So, the short answer is - one game.
