The only things that matter are: can the guy get open, and is he fast? Height should be way down the list of things that are important.
Ding ding.

I have never understood why height is so sought after. I mean how many times is a WR reaching up and grabbing passes out of the air over the secondary? Like 3% of the time. F that. Get someone who can get open. Who cares how big they are.

Not busting on you but in theory we should give away our top draft picks for a lot of lower draft picks and still pick up some UFA's? Especially since this team has done better in later rounds.

All I was saying was that orher than Cooley, mcintosh, and smoot, we haven't seen any 2-3rd round picks be serviceable pieces to the teams success since 2000. Our first rounders other than Ramsey, gardner, and campbell have been good to great at times. I hope our new regime can keep up the luck with scouting the first round talent and finding UFDA or late round studs like Alexander and Peirce but will also be a better set of eyes for talent in the middle rounds if they keep said picks.

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas

I'm disappointed he got released but if the coaching staff thought he brought nothing to the table then that's what had to happen. If he finds success elsewhere, great, if not then w/e, just another bust from yesteryear. I can't believe out of the 3 second rounders from the '08 draft all we got is a backup tight end out of it.

He should land a job in no time, don't worry about it.

Maybe, and I think that you are correct. However, I wonder if this wasn't a calculated risk by Shanallen:

option a) someone else does pick him up and Shanallen are unconcerned since they have lost patience with DT

or

option b) he doesn't get picked up right away and Shanallen, having used their nuclear weapon motivational tool, bring him back

He can be a male model.
Kidding.
Maybe this will be the just the thing that will humble him and make him work harder to get become a better route runner.
I hope so, I think he is a good kid.

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas

I can see the colts picking Thomas up for a few reasons...
1..to pick his brain before we play in a week
2..they have injuries to Wayne,Colley and others all across the board.
3..I thought he did quite well on Kick returns

Somebody will pick him up...you can bet on that. just because nobody wanted to trade a 7th rounder for him, doesn't mean he won't get scooped up real quick

There's a bunch of teams that are getting dinged at the WR position and will take a flyer on his raw talent alone

Pats?
Panthers? (smith hurt)
Colts? (bunch of injuries)
Rams? (Mark Clayton is their #1 WR with their injuries)
Lots of teams...

VJ will be a Redskin in about a week

Remember what I said folks? 5th and a 3rd...lol

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas

The '08 draft is definitely in the discussion, but I still think we've seen worse.

2003 - only netted Dockery as a legit NFL starter.

2002 - only noteworthy player is Cartwright. Well, Robert Royal too I guess.

1996 - total swing and a miss on OL Andre Johnson. He didn't even make it out of training camp. Stephen Davis is the only player that came out of this one.

At least with 2008 we still have Moore, Horton, Kelly, and Davis. So I think there's still some time for this one to be salvaged.

We only had 3 picks in 2003, and Dockery was a pretty good find in the 3rd, although Taylor Jacobs was as big a bust as Thomas (especially with Anquan Boldin still on the board). Good point about 2002 - that was another 10 player draft that yielded very little long term (Rock and Betts). It's depressing looking back at so many botched drafts, but we can take comfort that the FO hit home runs with Orakpo and Trent Williams as our top picks the last two years. Both will be perenniel Pro Bowlers if they remain healthy. We need Allen to maintain that trend in future drafts.

I just find it hard to believe. It would be complete disaster if another team discovers the guy can play. Maybe he just needs a change.

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas

Some players are just better fits in other systems. For whatever reason DT couldn't win over Shanahan. Doesn't mean he can't play, he just can't play here.

I had high hopes for Thomas but I'm just not sure he's ever going to be elite. His hands aren't anything special and I never got the vibe he was 110% into football. He seems more interested in everything that comes along with the fame and fortune of the game.

Maybe he can be a solid #2 or #3 somewhere, who knows.

I was about to say that. His being released could serve as motivation for him if it is his ambition to become a better football player. While he was unable to find his nitche here, that dosen't necessarily preclude him from becoming a better performer somewhere else. His future in the NFL [should he have one] wil be interesting to keep an eye on.

Thomas never impressed me as being a guy real serious about the game. There always seemed to be other things that were more important to him.

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas

I know AJ Green looks great in college but let's be honest, WRs are very shaky when it's comes to the draft. There have been so many Bust in the first round at WR..

Green could be the next Randy Moss or the next Malcolm Kelly..

Ok, here's my crackpipe theory:

This is a gamble by Allen to see if NE picks up Thomas, he becomes an all star with Brady. NE doesn't trade for VJ, who the skins then go after, he joins the team in a week, like ACE said.

Back to reality!!
