Watt basically won that game. He's going to do that this year. He owned the game.

I was very unimpressed with that entire game plan. From the playcalling, to the lack of attention paid to Watt, 0 designed runs for Griffin. It was Jim Zorn part 2. Oh, and don't get me started on that shitty reverse call deep in our own territory. Hopefully we'll see some improvements next week. Let's get DJax down the field a bit more, let's get RG3 on the move, and for god sakes, coach his ass up and get him to stop BACK-PEDDLING!

I'm not ready to call him Reggie White as a few of those sacks were on Griffin. He pushed around our line a bit, but wasn't that to be expected? We made some plays on him in the run game. I would've liked to see Gruden have some designed rollouts to the left side and go away from him.

Re: Week 1 Positives and Negatives

One more comparison.

Look at those 3 pictures again, BUT focus on TWilliams side. Pic 1 the line up is fairly mirrored of Watt/Polumbus. Pic 2 Trent is engaged and winning, Polumbus is engaged, but Watt is really nearly passed him. Pic 3 Trent is smoking a cigar, the Right Guard is looking for who else he can feed to Trent, and Polumbus is about a yard behind Watt.

We know Polumbus isn't Williams, and their other DE isn't Watt so obviously Trent should win his matchup, but just pointing out another way to look at those slides.

QBs are under duress all over the league, and RG3 is no different. Plenty of big slow QBs are able to react quickly, step up and/or to the side and buy time to make a throw downfield. Stafford did it a bunch just last night. Just watch some other games. The contrast is stark.

It's not speed, but reaction time. RG3 did a much better job of reacting sooner in the 2nd half, but he stills opts to go backwards and roll out vs. taking the lane right in front of him. There's no reason he should have been outrushed by Ryan Fitzpatrick. There were yards to be gained, but he either reacted too late or, for whatever reason, did not want to cross the line of scrimmage under any circumstances.

You had the right idea though. Robert needs to climb the pocket more. The one play I remember was the intentional grounding play. He should of stepped up in the pocket instead of running in to JJ Watt, but hindsight is always 20/20.

Re: Week 1 Positives and Negatives

Let's not forget RG3 is in transition to BECOME a pocket passer. I think folks are to quick to judge his performance. He needs reps, live game reps to get comfortable with the new scheme and as a quarterback. I didn't and I don't expect him to light it up straight out the gate. I also didn't and don't expect J. Gruden to be Coach of the Year either. I want the Skins to win just as much as the man but I understand this team needs time to gel and mesh together. Time to start lower expectations ppl my issue would be if RG3 regresses more than he progresses to early to tell.

That's a 5 win team that will get dominated most of the season. Nothing he did justifies 6 points.

Agree with you about the game plan. It was weak. Jay Gruden needs to improve and he knows it.

Robert is going to take a little longer. He needs some time to get rid of old, bad habits and to feel comfortable doing things the right way.

Eric Winston is looking for a job but for some reason Tyler Polumbus is on our roster!?!?

That game was lost, not won.

I thought the game plan was fine, and executed nicely as well.

This game really came down to the stupid mistakes. We lost, like you said... they didn't win. If Helu had blocked Blue, Paul hadn't fumbled, and Griffin hadn't tripped over Lichtensteiger's foot, we would have won the game and nobody would be complaining about the game plan.

Sure, we could have went with longer routes, but Griffin was already getting hit like it was. It would have been really ugly if he had started waiting 4 seconds for Jackson to get open downfield.

Perhaps we should have ran more, but if you take away the plays in the two-minute drills, the run-pass ratio was fairly close. If I counted right, the ratio outside those two minute drills was 23 passes(not counting the plays that were penalized), and 17 rushes. It's not like Gruden was heaving the ball all over the place. And if we had had the lead for most of the game, I'm sure we would have ran way more.

Also, I made this point already Sunday I believe, but Reed going down hurt as much as anything. I'm sure he was a key part of the game plan.

In the end, to me at least, it came down to two things: boneheaded plays and JJ Watt.

Not saying Polumbus is better but there is a reason why Winston is always looking for a job.

Re: Week 1 Positives and Negatives

i tempered my disappoint in the play calling since i heard RG3's presser, Keim and others say the texans D played deep dropping 2-3 back almost every single play and forced a short pass game plan.

the Texans D scheme should have been perfect for us since we were going into the game with a short passing scheme but alas, turnovers in the RZ and the fact that we cant sustain long drives without getting a sack or some other screw up.

Re: Week 1 Positives and Negatives

RGIII spent too much time looking at the rush and not enough time looking downfield. that was my take away from watching the game.

however, if you take away the turnovers, we could have won even with the other issues. so there's hope, but there's some work to do before the team is ready for prime time.
